Biography Brett Weston was born December 16, 1911 in Los Angeles, California. He started taking photographs in 1925 while living in New Mexico with his father. He went to school until he was thirteen years old when his father took him out of school so that he can become his fathers apprentice who was also a photographer. At the age of seventeen a group of his images were included in the German exhibition “Film un Foto” which was also considered one of the most important “avant-garde” exhibitions during the two World Wars. Weston’s photography style changed all the time between Abstract to Documentary to High contrast, the list goes on. His style is more about what intrigues himself. He’s more into the stuff like broken glass, Close ups, etc. . Early influences on the photographer is his father who was also a known photographer Edward Weston, He traveled all around the country and world taking pictures with his father. Some interesting fact about Brett Weston is he’s been married and divorced four times. He has one daughter. Van Deren Coke describes Brett Weston as “child genius of American photography. Brett’s photography can be found in galleries states like Arizona, Colorado, California, New York, Missouri, Hawaii, Louisiana, Texas, Washington DC, New Hamshire and Pennsylvania.
Banyan Roots Hawaii, 1979 There is defiantly natural lighting in this photograph and the main subject of this is the roots of that tree. There is a lot of texture included. I’m not really sure what he is trying to say with this photograph other than it’s something he likes and defiantly stands out. I selected this photograph because it stands out to me you notice it right then and there. It also has Great texture and just pops out.
Sutton Place New York, 1945 I believe this photograph was taken with natural lighting. The main focus in this photograph would be the vines and the windows on the side of the building because that’s all this picture really is. There is a lot of texture and leading lines included in the photograph. I think what he is trying to say with this picture is just how nature can overcome something and still look beautiful. I chose this photograph because it really stood out to me.
Pines in Fog Monterey, 1962 I would think that he used natural lighting, the lighting is coming from the cloudy sky. The main subject of this photograph is the trees and the fog surrounding the trees. This photograph works with texture, color, somewhat of leading lines. I just think what he was trying to get across peoples minds with this photograph is just how amazing nature can be. I chose this photograph because it is just the kind of photography i’m into.
Shoreline and Boats San Francisco, 1939 Looks like he was using natural lighting. The main subject of this photograph would have to be the boats in the water or even the shore line. This photograph has a lot of texture and has a horizon line. I think what he is trying to say with this photograph is just life on the beach and on the water. I chose this photograph because I really like the setting of this area and it just looks really good.
Brooklyn Bridge New York, 1946 The lighting is a natural kind of Lighting. The main focus of this photograph is the bridge. There is leading lines in this photo. I think what he was trying to get across this photo is just something new in his time. I chose this photo because there’s a story of history behind it.
Edward Weston Carmel Highlands, 1938 He most likely used artificial lighting for this photo because of being a portrait. I think the main focus of this photograph is this mans smile and eyes. There is a lot of texture and the background blurs out which really does add to the main subject. I think what he was trying to get across this photo is just that this is a happy man, and it being his fathere probably is a lot of emotion towards this because he looked up to this man, he was his muse. I chose this photo because it caught my attention, there is a lot of emotion along with this photo.
