DESCRIBE INPUT • Input devices translate words, sounds, images and actions that people understand into symbols that the system unit can process: input devices include keyboards, digital cameras, and a mouse.

KEYBOARD ENTRY • Keyboards translate numbers, letters and special characters. Traditional, ergonomic, and folding are types of Keyboards.

POINTING DEVICES • A mouse controls a pointer on the monitor. Joysticks are used primarily for games. Touch screens are pressure sensitive monitors. Light pens close circuits on special monitors.

SCANING DEVICES • Optical scanners or reproduce text images. Bar code readers identify and price products. Characters and mark recognition devices recognize special characters and marks.

IMAGE CAPTURING • Digital cameras capture still images. Digital video cameras capture motion. Webcams are specialized digital video cameras.

DIGITIZING DEVICES • Graphic tables record sketches and tracings of maps and other drawings. Digital notebooks record handwritten notes.

AUDIO-INPUT DEVICES • Audio-input devices convert sounds for processing. Voice recognition systems accept voice commands to control computer operations and to create documents.

WHAT IS OUTPUT? • Output is processed data or information. Output devices provide output for people by translating what the computer has processed into a form that people can use and understand.

MONITORS • Monitor standards indicate screen quality. Some monitors are used on the desktop: others to display book content, presentations, and television.

PRINTERS • There are three types of printers: ink-jet, laser, and thermal. Printers make hard copies of documents.

AUDIO-OUTPUT DEVICES • Audio-output devices produce sounds for people. Voice output is common and simpler than voice recognition.

COMBITION INPUT AND OUTPUT DEVICES • Fax machines send and receive images over telephone lines. Multifunction devices have input and output capabilities. Internet telephones use telephony to connect people. Terminals connect to the host computer or server.
