Paul’s Story Fishing Lean Times Slavery • In Paul’s village the only source of food and income is fishing • The boys learn how to fish and swim at age 3 or 4. The women sell the excess fish for other necessities. • When there is not enough fish, the people starve. • The slavers know this and come during the lean times, offering cash to mothers in exchange for the boys, falsely offering to care for and educate them. • The boys are taken far from home and put to hard and abusive labor in a large fishing operation. • The boys are so abused that many of them suffer permanent spinal deformities from their back-breaking work of untangling nets. The Christian Council of Ghana rescued 198 of these boys and returned them home.
Paul’s Story Some major problems have simple solutions. this village, education and a large smoker would end the threat of starvation and slavery. For Joyce Larko of the Christian Council is providing the education. A smoker would allow the women to smoke fish during the good fishing season to save for the lean season to eat and to sell. One smoker has been provided, and others are needed.
