Breaking down the 4 th wall The relationship
Breaking down the 4 th wall The relationship between the audience and the players Mc. Burney’s The Encounter • Based on Petru Popescu’s The Encounter: Amazon Beaming published in 1991 • Follows Photographer Mc. Intyre’s language-less relationship with the Mayoruna tribe Introduction This poster presentation discusses the changing relationship between the audience and the players in contemporaneous theatre and evaluates how technological advances of the 21 st century affect the breaking down of the fourth wall. The poster will consider the dramatic text and performance (via live stream in February 2015) of The Encounter as directed and performed by Simon Mc. Burney. Technology • Take a trip down the Amazon and experience The Encounter use of technology to bring a sense of inclusivity and immersion to the audience. Time and Space Attempts to rule out time…[and]… space in the universe Interactivity of performance “dynamic hands-on-experience…[in which]…something is received in exchange” For discourse surrounding these topics, photos and references visit: http: //breakingdowntheforthwall. weebly. com Conclusion Plays such as Mc. Burney’s continue to challenge theatre as we know it, breaking away from conventional forms of theatre by using the wealth of technology that is becoming more accessible and more advanced in its ability. Through technology we can communicate, engage and feel on a global scale on a single theatrical experience and break down barriers of space and time. Technological advances allow for new meaning to be brought to the concept of breaking down of the forth wall.
