Branching unit
Proposed configuration • three storeys linked by a 100 m electro mechanical optical cable (EMC). • similar to the MILOM line deployed in the Antares site on 2004. • the capability to reconstruct atmospheric muon tracks as well as the monitoring of some environmental parameters like the absorption length not srictly necessary • no acoustics and LED beacons present Direction sensitive PMT ~ L=100 m 3 PMTs ~ L=100 m
tests in the hyperbaric chamber at 400 bar (3300 m x 1. 2) of the Antares LCM containers we used the hyperbaric chamber at the shore station of Catania: 24 h @400 bar + 7 full cycles 0 -330 bar test was succesfull in 3+3 LCM containers 5 needed
electro optical connector from Seaproof electronics container P= 1 atm deep water P=400 bar LCM electrical conductors container optic fibres The electrical conductors are terminated each side in solder pots on the pressure barrier op fibres directly feed thru the barrier block.
qualification of connector and cable we (Patrik and I) used the pressure tank in Brest @ 400 bar • 1 loop for the optic fibres (22 x 7 = 154 m) • 2 loops for the conductors • measure of -electrical insulation -electrical resistence -optical attenuation
qualification of connector and cable 1° cycle at 400 bar, 24 hours 10 cycles at 330 bar, ramp up : 3 bar/m, ramp down 12 bar/m continuous monitoring using Tiny. Tags test was succesfull, qualification of cable and connector OK

Electronic Status Most part of electronic components of the string are currently available in Genova. Excluding acoustic components that will not be integrated, more than 90% of components are ready. (Bari, CPPM, NIKHEF, Saclay, Strasbourg, Valencia, . . ) Still some under developement. . .
Electronic Status l The On-Shore data transmission system was the old MILOM one and it has been took from CPPM. In January DWDM components will be tested at NIKHEF. l The Off-Shore data transmission system need a new DWDM board that is currently under development at NIKHEF. (Thanks to Jelle Hogenbirk for his work, his courtesy and his time)
Electronic Status l Considering the January tests on DWDM boards, and considering the availability of integration facilities of Pisa and Bari, we can suppose that in may we will power up the string, for the first time out of the titanium containers.
Still missing. . . • PMTs: only 1 OM available in Genova. MILOM recovered in January: its OMs available? • BSS: probably assembled in Genova. Some of Ti parts already ordered. Acoustic release from LNS? • IL cable: to be ordered • current meter: to be ordered (? )
CONCLUSIONS • construction is underway; • mechanical tests almost completed; • New design of electro optical connector approved; acceptance test passed; 3 cables with connectors ordered; • Most of the electronics boards already available. • some items still missing (PMTs, BSS, …) • power up the string expected in may
