What effects the strength of waves? Fetch is the distance the wind blows over the water. The strength of the waves is determined by: • the fetch • the strength of the wind • the length of time the wind blows for Strong waves are larger, have more energy and so move more material.
Types of Waves Constructive Waves Destructive Waves • Low energy = small waves • High energy = big waves • Bigger swash than backwash • Bigger backwash than swash • Sand put on the beach • Sand pulled off beach (erosion) • Beach gets bigger • Beach gets smaller • ‘Summer’ waves • ‘Winter’ waves
