Brain Structures/Functions *CSF: Cerebrospinal Fluid (surrounds brain and spinal cord) *Cerebrum: largest part of brain, divided into right and left hemispheres. Each hemisphere has 4 lobes (frontal, parietal, occipital and temporal). -gyri: upfoldings of cerebrum -sulci: downfoldings of cerebrum *Cerebellum: posterior portion of brain (helps control skeletal movement)
Peripheral Nervous System: PNS Cranial Nerves: branching off brain -12 pairs Spinal Nerves: branching off spinal cord -31 pairs
Homeostasis • Body regulating internal stability • Examples: sweating, blinking, reflexes, heart rhythm, breathing, constrictions of blood vessels etc……. .
Sensory Functions • All sensory pathways begin with a receptor and travel toward the CNS • Senses: – -Touch and Pressure (Meissner: fine touch, Pacinian: deep pressure) – -Temperature – -Pain – -Body Position
Special Senses • • Smell Taste Sight Hearing/Equilibrium • *These all have special organs to help detect sensations.
A few other things…. • Emotion Center: Limbic System is responsible for these. It interconnects parts of the brain to create emotions. • Acataphasis: caused by lesions on the brain, inability to express thoughts in a connected manner. • Alzheimer: Degeneration of brain tissue. • Ametropic: inability to focus objects on the retina. • Aphasia: loss of language function, caused by trauma to the brain.
And just a few more…. • Cataracts: abnormal loss of transparency of the lens. • Epilepsy: episodes of convulsions, seizures. • Glaucoma: elevated pressure in the eye • Vertigo: dizziness
