TROOP 966 MISSION STATEMENT • The mission of Troop 966 is to prepare our scouts for excellence over their lifetime through building character, instilling a sense of community and citizenship and developing an appreciation for the outdoors

TROOP ACTIVITIES OVERVIEW Summer Camps Backpacking (1 week each in July/August) (Year Round) Camp Chawanakee (Shaver Lake in the Sierra Nevada Mountains) Camp Emerald Bay (Catalina Island) Local 1 or 2 nights in San Gabriel, San Bernardino and San Jacinto Mountains Multi-day in the Sierra Nevada Mountains Rock Climbing (2 -3 times per year) Joshua Tree Indian Cove (October and March) Malibu Creek State Park (November/December)

NEW FAMILY FAQ’S What do I need to do to get started? How do scouts earn their rank requirements? How do scouts earn merit badges? What gear do I need for camping and backpacking? What is the troop calendar of events and when is it established? • Get a copy of the scout book from the scout store in San Pedro or online (see email from Evan Mc. Callum) • Parents and scouts review the requirements for the scout rank • Acquire a scout uniform either from the scout store in San Pedro or online (troop provides neckerchief, troop t-shirt, badges for troop number and patrol patches) • Fill out the BSA youth application form provided by Evan Mc. Callum and return to Cathie Miller • Adults must be complete BSA adult application, BSA medical form and online Youth Protection training to participate in any events outside of troop meetings • Ranks: Scout , Tenderfoot, Second Class, First Class, Star, Life, Eagle • Typical span to achieve all ranks through first class is 1 ½ to 2 years • All requirements for Scout through First Class including all merit badges can be worked in parallel • Signoff on requirements performed at events or troop meetings by Assistant Scout Masters, Scoutmaster, Star rank and higher scouts • Once all requirements signed off for the current rank, request Scoutmaster conference followed by a board review to verify the scout has performed/learned the requirements • Merit badges can be earned through troop activities, independent study, summer camp, council events, and special events which are advertised through various emails from the troop and council • Important to try and complete all prerequisites for the special events, summer camp before hand so they can finish at the event and not have a partial merit badge • Troop provides all tents, troop cooking equipment and cooking fuel, water containers, trash containers, rock climbing equipment (shoes, helmets, ropes, etc. ) , pioneering supplies (see detailed list in intro packet) • Scouts and adult participants will need personal camping equipment and protective clothing, backpacks, appropriate shoes (details provided as part of future event planning) • The troop calendar is established in September for the year for most events (scouts encouraged to plan as much as possible) • The official calendar is shown on the troop website
RECOMMENDATIONS FOR EAGLE SCOUT ACHIEVEMENT • All requirements must be met and application submitted by 18 th birthday • Keep momentum going for rank advancement • Start eagle required merit badges (13 of the 21 total) early and don’t wait until the end • Complete eagle scout project and submit report well before the deadline
