BOX Method Multiplying Polynomials Warm Up Good Morning

BOX Method Multiplying Polynomials

Warm – Up!! Good Morning!! As you walk in, please pick up your calculator! 1. Add or Subtract the following polynomials: a. (x + 3) - ( 3 x – 14) b. (x 2 + 4 x -82) + (2 x 2 +15) 2. Classify the polynomial and degree for the following: a. x 3 y 2 b. x + 13 c. x 2 + 3 x – 15

Multiplying Polynomials There are multiple ways to multiply polynomials including FOIL and the box method. Today we will be looking at the first way: the BOX method. This way will ALWAYS work!

Steps to the Box Method 1. Draw a box – this will depend on the type of polynomials. (2 x 2 for 2 binomials, 2 x 3 for binomial and trinomial, and 3 x 3 for 2 trinomials) 2. Write a polynomial on the top and side of the box. (It does NOT matter which binomial or trinomial goes on the top or side. ) 3. Multiply each of the corresponding boxes. 4. Write out each term in your boxes. 5. Lastly, simplify or combine like terms if needed!

Example 1: Multiply (3 x – 5) (5 x + 2)

Example 2: Multiply (7 p – 2) (3 p – 4)

Example 3: Multiply 2 (2 x – 5)(x – 5 x +4)

Example 4: Multiply 2 + 2 (x 3 x – 7) (4 x – 2 x +1)

You Try!! Multiply the following polynomials! These are in your guided note! 1. Multiply (5 x – 4) (2 x + 4) 2. Multiply (8 w + 3) (7 w – 6) 3. Multiply (4 z – 2) (3 z + 9) 4. Multiply (2 x – 7)(2 x 2 – 5 x +10) 5. Multiply (x 2 – 4 x – 2) (x 2 + 3 x – 4)
