Biological Foundations of Psychology > Genetic Basis of Psychology Chromosomes Carry Genetic Information • Chromosomes are structures in the nucleus of a cell that contain DNA, histone protein and other structural proteins. • All animals have a varying number of chromosomes which transmit genetic material. Human beings have 46 chromosomes (23 pairs). • Human chromosomes are divided into two types – autosomes and sex chromosomes. • Chromosomal abnormalities can occur, resulting in a variety of genetic conditions such as Down syndrome. Biological Foundations of Psychology > Genetic Basis of Psychology Genes Influence Behavior • Classic or Mendelian genetics examines how genes are passed from one generation to the next. • Developmental genetics is the study of how genes influence behavior. • Behavioral genetics is the study of how animals (including humans) behave. • There are many ways to manipulate genetic makeup, such as by cross-breeding for certain characteristics. • It is difficult to determine whether genetics ("nature") or the environment ("nurture") have a stronger influence on behavior, and it is largely believed that human behavior is an intricate result of both. Biological Foundations of Psychology > Genetic Basis of Psychology Behavior Influences Genes • Drug use, environmental exposure, and eating habits have all been linked to changes in gene expression. While some influences are harmless or even beneficial, others can be extremely detrimental. Researchers hope to identify these behaviors and their responses. • EEG and PET scans have the ability to show psychologists how certain behaviors trigger reactions in the brain, leading the discovery of specific genes, such as those that influence addictive behaviors. • Exposure to alcohol and drugs during the prenatal period can cause a host of developmental problems, the most serious of which is fetal alcohol syndrome. • Drug use, environmental exposure, and eating habits have all been linked to Environmental factors in drug and alcohol use View on Boundless. com changes in gene expression. Biological Foundations of Psychology Key terms • autosome Any chromosome other than sex chromosomes. • behavioral genetics The field of study that examines the role of genetics in animal (including human) behaviors; it often sparks the nature versus nurture debate. • chromosome A structure in the cell nucleus that contains DNA, histone protein, and other structural proteins. • developmental genetics The study of the process by which organisms grow and develop. • ethology The scientific study of human and animal behaviour. • fetal alcohol syndrome Any of a spectrum of birth defects that result from excessive alcohol consumption by the mother during pregnancy • gene A unit of heredity; a segment of DNA or RNA that is transmitted from one generation to the next, and that carries genetic information such as the sequence of amino acids for a protein. • genetics The branch of biology that deals with the transmission and variation of inherited characteristics, in particular chromosomes and DNA. Biological Foundations of Psychology A young girl shares her father's athletic tendencies and loves to hike. Are these traits the result of genetics or her environment? A) Her environment - being raised by her father has led her to share similar interests B) Both environment and genetics - while she may have inherited aspects of her father's bodytype and build, she has likely also been influenced by her environment. C) Genetics - her father's athleticism has been genetically passed down D) Neither genetics or environment - traits such as these are entirely by chance Free to share, print, make copies and changes.
