Global Art Since 1950 CE Key terms • abstract expressionism An American genre of modern art that used improvised techniques to generate highly abstract forms. • aesthetic Concerned with beauty, artistic impact, or appearance. • bay An opening in a wall, especially between two columns; the distance between two supports in a vault or building with a pitched roof. • bell hooks Born Gloria Jean Watkins (1952 - ); an American author, feminist, and social activist; known for her focus on the interconnectivity of race, capitalism, and gender and their ability to perpetuate systems of oppression. • Ben-Day dots The Ben-Day dots printing process, named after illustrator and printer Benjamin Henry Day, Jr. , is similar to pointillism. Depending on the effect, colors, and optical illusion needed, small colored dots are closely spaced, widely spaced, or overlapping. The movement primarily involved visual arts, poetry, theatre, and graphic design, and was characterized by nihilism, deliberate irrationality, disillusionment, cynicism, chance, randomness, and the rejection of the prevailing standards in art. • deconstruction A philosophical theory of textual criticism; a form of critical analysis. • dematerialization The act or process of dematerializing. • eclecticism Any form of art that borrows from multiple other styles. • ephemeral Something which lasts for a short period of time. • existentialism A twentieth-century philosophical movement emphasizing the uniqueness of each human existence in freely making self-defining choices. This movement had foundations in the thought of Søren Kierkegaard (1813 -55) and Friedrich Nietzsche (1844 -1900) and was notably represented in the works of Karl Jaspers (1883 -1969), Gabriel Marcel (1887 -1973), Martin Heidegger (1889 -1976), and Jean-Paul Sartre (1905 -80). • feminism A social theory or political movement supporting the equality of both sexes in all aspects of public and private life; specifically, a theory or movement that argues that legal and social restrictions on females must be removed in order to bring about such equality. • found-object A natural object, or one manufactured for some other purpose, considered as part of a work of art. • imagery Visible representations of objects. • kinetic Of or relating to motion. • mass A large quantity; a sum.
