Botulinum toxin injections for low back pain Waseem et al (2011) Overview of the study Objectives • To determine the effects of botulinum toxin injections in adults with low back pain (LBP) Methods • Evidence current up to 1 February 2010 • Participants: Adults (18 and older) with non-specific LBP and/or sciatica (acute, subacute, or chronic) • Interventions: All intramuscular injections of botulinum neurotoxin (Bo. NT) serotypes • Outcomes o Primary: Symptoms (pain intensity), disability, overall improvement or proportion of patients recovered, back-specific functional status, well-being o Secondary: Physiological outcomes, satisfaction with care, adverse events
Botulinum toxin injections for low back pain • Waseem et al (2011) Results & Conclusions 3 trials (123 participants) included Interventions Evidence More effective than saline injections for pain and function in the short and intermediate-term but not in the long-term Bo. NT injections More effective than traditional acupuncture for reducing pain and improving function in the intermediate-term but no differences in the short and long-term More effective than corticosteroid injection for reducing pain in the short-term but not in the long-term Quality of evidence Very low to Low Very low Ø Adverse events: A few cases of worsening pain after injection in both experimental and control groups Ø There is very low to low quality evidence that botulinum toxin injection is better than other injections in improving pain and function
