BACKGROUND o The e-GDDS was established by the IMF’s Executive Board in May 2015 to support improved data transparency, encourage statistical development, and help create synergies between data dissemination and surveillance. o The e-GDDS superseded the GDDS, which had been established in 1997. A link to the country’s NSDP is available on the IMF’s Dissemination Standards Bulletin Board (DSBB) o Botswana became one of the first countries to implement e. GDSS recommendations in Jan-2016
e-GDSS Implementation Training offered by IMF in Dec 2015 Redevelopment of the existing National Summary Data Page (NSDP) into SDMX Refresher Training offered to administrators in 2016, Pretoria, South Africa by IMF Continuous update of the NSDP through close monitoring both by the Country and IMF supporting team It utilised the existing portal (information highway dev. by Af. DB)
Botswana NSDP
Maintenance of Botswana NSDP o Relevant structure- Statistics producer Committee( NSO being the E-GDSS Coordinator ( technical and reference committee)- 3 focal persons for each agency) ( Central Bank; National Statistics Office and Ministry of Finance & Economic Development) o the NSDP page is uploaded as per the e-GDSS compliancy o loaded every after signed published offficial statistics by the respective NSDP administrators for each agency o The NSDP is linked to the Central Bank website and NSO website o IMF team continuously provides the updated Monitoring Tool and technical support
BENEFITS OF THE NSDP LINKED TO SDMX o modern solution offers users access to the new National Summary Data Page which avails complete information about the e-GDDS data categories in a flexible and modern system o Publication of essential macroeconomic data through the new NSDP provides national policy makers, international stakeholders, markets, and investors with easy access to information that the IMF’s Executive Board identified as critical for surveillance purposes.
BENEFITS OF THE NSDP LINKED TO SDMX Cont, o Making information easily accessible in both human and machine readable formats allows all users—domestic and international—to have simultaneous access to timely data released on a disciplined dissemination schedule based on an Advance Release Calendar (ARC) o which will bring greater data transparency, which will also be developed. o It serves as a one-stop publication vehicle for essential macroeconomic data o
Lessons Learnt o A robust Statistical Legislation which supports dissemination platforms of official statistics o Close collaboration between the implementing agencies and the IMF supporting team is critical o Close collaboration between the producers of macro-economic data (NSO, Central Bank, MFED) for timely reporting and ALWAYS up-to-date NSDP o Continuous capacity building on the SDMX initiative o Consider adopting SDMX for dissemination of other indicators not included in the e-GDDS reporting ( data revolution, readiness for SDG reporting)
Lessons Learnt o Timely uploading of published data into the NSDP o Harmonisation of the portals minimises more effort in dissemination and makes it easy and simple o Reduces reporting burden to international agencies o Requires uptime internet connectivity
