Today’s Topic is- Right forms of verbs Part-2
Learning outcomes v After end of the lesson, the students will be able tov write the sentences correctly v fill the gaps with right forms of verbs. v identify the subject and verb agreement
If now/today/at this moment/at present/day by day/ this morning/this month/ this year is used in the sentence , the sentence will be present continuous tense. (a) The population is increasing day by day. (b)I am reading a book now. (c)He is going to market at this moment.
Ø If the subject of the sentence is singular number then the verb is singular and if the subject is plural then the verb is plural number. They play cricket. He writes a letter. Shadad is a meritorious student. Vehicles create traffic jam.
. Ø If yesterday/long ago /once upon a time /long since/ ago/ last night/ day before yesterday/last month is used in the sentence, the sentence will be past Indefinite. I received your letter yesterday. One day I borrowed a book from you. Runa went to school yesterday. Last night I dreamt a sweet dream
Past perfect +before+ past indefinite Øor past indefinite + after+ past perfect. Ø The patient had( die)before the doctor came. The patient had died before the doctor came. They arrived the station after the train (leave). They arrived the station after the train had left.
Ing is added to the verb after the preposition except to. He is now engaged in (read). Ans. : He is now engaged in reading. One can gather knowledge by (travel). Ans. : One can gather knowledge by traveling.
If Can not help, could not help , look forward to, addicted to, Habituated to, with a view to, get used to, would you mind etc. are used in the sentence , ing is added after them. We could not help studying. He is habituated to gambling. They become addicted to taking drugs. We went to Cox’s Bazar with a view to seeing the sea beach.
If there is a verb in place of the subject at the beginning of a sentence, ing is added to the verb. (To swim) is a good exercise. Swimming is a good exercise. (To speak) is an art. Speaking is an art.
After do, does, did, in any case whether in negative or interrogative you have to put the base form of the verb. He did not pass in the exam. Where do you live? She does not go to school.
