1. About Dissemination EUFORINNO (Reg. Pot No. 315982)
ABOUT DISSEMINATION What is dissemination? EUFORINNO (Reg. Pot No. 315982)
WHAT IS DISSEMINATION? EUFORINNO (Reg. Pot No. 315982)
WHAT IS DISSEMINATION? Pot No. 315982)
COMMUNICATION AND DISSEMINATION Communication: communication model ? ? ? Dissemination: we send the message and choose a channel, but we do not receive direct feedback EUFORINNO (Reg. Pot No. 315982)
WHAT IS DISSEMINATION? Merriam-Webster: DISSEMINATE: transitive verb • 1: to spread abroad as though sowing seed <disseminate ideas> • 2: to disperse throughout Origin of DISSEMINATE • Latin disseminatus, past participle of disseminare, from dis- + seminare to sow, from semin-, semen - seed EUFORINNO (Reg. Pot No. 315982)
VINCENT VAN GOGH – THE SOWER EUFORINNO (Reg. Pot No. 315982)
TYPES OF DISSEMINATION 1. Dissemination for Awareness – – audience: non-specific raising awareness in communities - promote 2. Dissemination for Understanding – specific: directly targeted groups of population that can directly benefit from our work - teach 3. Dissemination for Action – specific: change of practice; adoption of products, materials or approaches offered by our project / research / … - change EUFORINNO (Reg. Pot No. 315982)
Why is dissemination important? EUFORINNO (Reg. Pot No. 315982)
WHY IS DISSEMINATION IMPORTANT? • Public service: research is funded by the general public, so it is only fair to let them know what we are doing and spread awareness of our work. • „A project cannot be considered to have had real impact if there is no dissemination of its results beyond the boundaries of the project itself. “ EUFORINNO (Reg. Pot No. 315982)
WHY IS DISSEMINATION IMPORTANT? ? • Funding: increasing importance of dissemination in European and international projects. EUFORINNO (Reg. Pot No. 315982)
WHY IS DISSEMINATION IMPORTANT? Impressions about dissemination: (negative) • Difficult (but rewarding) • Questionable effect (sometimes) • Difficult to assess EUFORINNO (Reg. Pot No. 315982)
WHY IS DISSEMINATION IMPORTANT? Impressions about dissemination: (positive) • It provides added value to projects, as the impact can be potentially wider than the original focus • Ensures that projects have real impact • It can facilitate the achievement of sustainability and the long-term maintenance of projects EUFORINNO (Reg. Pot No. 315982)
WHY IS DISSEMINATION IMPORTANT? “The challenge of dissemination is to improve the accessibility of new findings to those who are trying to reach them. This means, firstly, ensuring the availability of materials or ideas to the target audience and secondly, making them comprehensible to those who receive them. ” - European center for Modern Languages: Guide for Pariticipants EUFORINNO (Reg. Pot No. 315982)
How to disseminate? EUFORINNO (Reg. Pot No. 315982)
HOW TO DISSEMINATE? Ask yourself these questions: 1. What do we want to disseminate? 2. Who are our stakeholders and what are we offering them? 3. When do we disseminate? 4. What are the most effective ways of disseminating? 5. Who might help us disseminate? EUFORINNO (Reg. Pot No. 315982)
HOW TO DISSEMINATE? To successfully disseminate, we need the following: • Content (research findings and products) • Target stakeholders (focus groups) • Action plan – Time – Channels – Help / Connections EUFORINNO (Reg. Pot No. 315982)
HOW TO DISSEMINATE? Dissemination strategy • A strategic document with dissemination content, target groups, goals, activities, etc. Dissemination action plan • A detailed dissemination action plan, which may look like this: Target group Timeframe Communication Channel Costs Who is responsible? EUFORINNO (Reg. Pot No. 315982)
HOW TO DISSEMINATE? What can I disseminate? • “Hard” outputs - “products” from projects and activities: Publications, DVDs, Promo material, … • Know-how, practical experience, general or specific information: blog posts, instructions, research details usable to others, … • Ideas: future project development, policy making, shifting project idea into other initiatives EUFORINNO (Reg. Pot No. 315982)
HOW TO DISSEMINATE? Disseminating European Projects: A. Ensure good management B. Define your goals and objectives C. Pick your audience D. Choose your message E. Use the right medium and means F. Evaluate your efforts EUFORINNO (Reg. Pot No. 315982)

2. Dissemination in Forest Genetic Monitoring EUFORINNO (Reg. Pot No. 315982)
DISSEMINATION & FGM Difficulties of FGM dissemination: • Abstract, scientific, complicated. . . topic • People deem it important • General public interested at first, but soon stop listening (too complicated) • Lack of understanding & education of general public • Not very „sexy“ to the media, difficult to get national coverage EUFORINNO (Reg. Pot No. 315982)
DISSEMINATION & FGM Benefits of FGM dissemination: • Fulfilling public role: giving back to the communities that allow us to conduct research and our project • Networking with other related insitutions and new project partners • Visibility of FGM research can translate to more funding EUFORINNO (Reg. Pot No. 315982)
DISSEMINATION & FGM How to disseminate FGM? • Explain related general topics – Genes, genetics etc. • Forest genetic resources – Biodiversity • Relate to / incorporate into messages: – climate change – sustainable forest management EUFORINNO (Reg. Pot No. 315982)
3. Case study: LIFEGENMON Dissemination EUFORINNO (Reg. Pot No. 315982)
CASE STUDY: LIFEGENMON is a project co-funded by LIFE (the Financial Instrument for the Environment) to support the long-term maintenance of adaptability of forest genetic resources to a changing environment through the development of a system for European forest genetic monitoring. EUFORINNO (Reg. Pot No. 315982)
CASE STUDY: LIFEGENMON Quick facts about LIFEGENMON: • The project combines efforts of 6 partners from 3 countries (Germany, Greece and Slovenia), • coordinated by the Slovenian Forestry Institute. • It lasts from July 2014 until June 2020 at the total budget of 5. 484. 162 € EUFORINNO (Reg. Pot No. 315982)

CASE STUDY: LIFEGENMON Q: What is going to be disseminated? EUFORINNO (Reg. Pot No. 315982)
CASE STUDY: LIFEGENMON Dissemination strategy is focused on promotion of knowledge on forest, forestry, forest genetics and raising awareness of climate changes on forests. The strategy is twofold: 1. Raising of general awareness – roles of forests in a healthy environment, – conservation of biodiversity and – providing a number of ecosystem services, EUFORINNO (Reg. Pot No. 315982)
CASE STUDY: LIFEGENMON 2. Raising the understanding of different publics, especially different stakeholders and policy makers, of: – the importance of conservation and – utilization of long-term adaptability potential of forest tree populations to withstand climate change and global challenges, through monitoring of changes in genetic diversity. EUFORINNO (Reg. Pot No. 315982)
