What is borderline personality disorder? • Borderline personality disorder (Also known as BPD) is a mental illness. Borderline personality disorder is marked by unstable moods, behavior and relationships.
Who's at risk? • About 1. 6% of adults in the US are diagnosed BPD a year. • BPD usually begins during early adulthood. • This may occur during childhood.
Signs & Symptoms of BPD • To be diagnosed with BPD a person must show an enduring pattern of at least 5 of the symptoms. • Suicidal thoughts, behaviors or threats. • Moods change often. Moods also become very intense. Each episode can last anywhere from a few hours to a few days. • Dangerous behaviors, such as spending sprees, substance abuse, reckless driving, and binge eating. • Feelings of emptiness or boredom. • Having stressful thoughts, or severe symptoms, such as feeling cut off from oneself, observing oneself from outside the body, or losing touch with reality.
What causes BPD? • Genetics • Environmental factors • A study shows that a person can inherit his or her temperament and specific personality traits, particularly impulsiveness and aggression. • Social or cultural factors.
Treatments for BPD • BPD can be treated with psychotherapy, or "talk" therapy. • Some mental health professionals may recommend medications to treat certain symptoms.
