Chapter 3 key takeaways Office of CLRI – Book Study ● Follows the stories of Tyrell and Jose and their experiences of criminalization. ● Minor citations for “little shit” played a crucial role in pipelining many of the young men in this study deeper into the criminal justice system. (pg 44) ● Officers consistently police certain kinds of deviance and crime, while neglecting or ignoring other instances when their help is needed (pg 54) ● Criminalization became internalized by many of the boys, even leading some to believe that they did not deserve protection from the police (pg 45)
Office of CLRI – Book Study What are your key takeaways from chapter 4? Please add comments/analysis to the chat room or Facebook live comments section
Chapter 4 key takeaways Office of CLRI – Book Study ● Dr. Rios discovered that school personnel, police officers, and other adults in the community had created an environment that made young people feel criminalized from a young age. And he discovered that the young men in his study believed that most adults in the community worked to punish them. (page 76) ● At EOCS, stigma, labeling, detention, harassment, and humiliation were just about the only consistent experiences that young people could count on as they entered the school. (page 82) ● Conversations between school personnel, police, and probation officers almost always followed the same trajectory: “These parents need to learn how to discipline these kids’; ”It’s their parents’ fault. ” (page 83) ● Parents felt compelled to obey the discourse provided by the youth control complex: ‘Your child is a deviant, your child needs to be scrutinized and policed’.
