Why did God send Judges? The repeated apostasies (abandonment) and ensuing judgments which are the subject of the Book of Judges have their origin in the primal act of disobedience, that Israel did not exterminate the inhabitants of the land.
Introductory Statement • An introductory summary of the conquest, describing the events which happened after the death of Joshua. • Victories are gained by Judah and Simeon (thou not complete) • Caleb appears as the leader of the tribe of Judah, thou he is not spoken of as one of the Judges • Then follows the enumeration of those districts which the Israelites were unable to conquer. The reason of this is revealed by the angel of Jehovah; is because the people had not obeyed the voice of their God, but had made covenants with the people of the land, and had refrained from breaking down their altars ***The people lift their voices and weep**

Judges - defined • This book is a literary bridge God brings up Judges to deliver them from there enemies. There is a downward spiral…a breaking away from God • Samuel/Kings “We are in bondage in our land” Not in a foreign land, but our own land. Major Judges/Accomplishments • Othniel – delivered Israel from a Mesopotamian King (Cushite) • Ehud – of the tribe of Benjamin, accomplishment of the South • Eglon – King of Moab, seized the city of Jericho • Ehud – drove out the Moabites across the Jordan • Deborah/Barak of Kadesh Naphtali defeated the Canaanites • Gideon – God-fearing farmer (32, 000 to 10, 000 to 300) <Faith in God, God wanted to take the credit and instill Faith back into His people • Jephthah – Tribe of Gad, defeated the Ammonites and dislodged them from all of Israel
