Book Discussion Questions Book Discussion 3 Setting How
Book Discussion Questions
Book Discussion 3 • Setting: How does the setting impact the plot? • Describe the setting. Then, describe how this affects the characters and their actions. • Example: – In my book Lord of the Flies, a group of young boys is stranded on a tropical island. There is a jungle, a lagoon, and the open sea. The boys hear scary noises and fear a “beast” who lives in the jungle. This affects the plot because the boys decide to build weapons to protect themselves against the beast. They form a society that makes judicial decisions in order to stay safe. Textual Evidence: “Maybe there is a beast… maybe it's only us. ” (pg. 45)
Book Discussion 3 • Plot: What is the overall plot of your novel? Think about a plot diagram. If you are halfway through your book, you should be able to identify exposition, rising action, and possibly climax.
Book Discussion 3 The book begins with a group of young boys surviving a plane crash in the middle of the jungle. Ralph and Piggy are two survivors who find a conch shell, and use this to call to the other survivors. The boys decide to create a society in which they make decisions together, and the holder of the conch has the power to speak. The boys work together to hunt for food and find water. One boy, Jack, begins to take on a leadership role in the group, and starts teaching boys to make weapons. The boys fear a “beast” who lives somewhere in the jungle. The boys also make fun of the character Piggy because he is overweight and wears glasses. I have not reached the climax of my book yet. However, tensions are rising between Jack and Ralph. Both boys seem to want to lead the group. I think the climax will have something to do with the beast attacking the group. Textual Evidence: “We've got to have rules and obey them. After all, we're not savages. We're English, and the English are best at everything. ” (pg. 36)
Book Discussion 3 • Mood: Choose a particular scene that you have read so far. Identify the mood of this scene. Explain. • Remember, mood is how the reader feels while reading the story.
Book Discussion 3 • I have chosen the scene where the character Simon is killed by the boys. Simon believes that he has found the beast in the jungle. He runs to tell the other boys of his discovery, but the other boys are already in the midst of late night hunting ritual. In the middle of the chaos, Simon is mistaken for the beast, and is killed by the boys. • The mood of this scene is confusing and sad. I say confusing because there is so much shouting and chaos during the scene when Simon enters the cave. I don’t understand how the boys mistook him for a monster. I say sad, because Simon was one of the best characters. He always kept a level head and made rational decisions when the other boys started to fall apart. • Textual Evidence: • “Softly, surrounded by a fringe of inquisitive bright creatures, itself a silver shape beneath the steadfast constellations, Simon's dead body moved out towards the open sea. ” (pg. 51)
