Book Cover Death and the Cornish Fiddler
My inspiration for this particular book was that the original title has a very bland cover. For this reason I have used this book as the subject of the exercise.
The props I used were as follows: • Halloween mask £ 1 from Poundland • Fake blood £ 1 from Poundland • Cornish pastie – not fake from Greggs (now eaten) • An antique miniature violin
How the props were arranged on the table
Camera Settings: • Exposure 1/125 sec • ISO 100 • F-stop f/16 • Focal Length 20 mm • Metering mode Spot
Lighting The lighting was a simple one light setup with a honeycomb diffuser on a dish. The light was on the right of the table and angled at about 45 degrees to give a slightly sinister look.
This is the image straight from the camera before any post processing
Post processing In post processing I cropped the image and painted out the highlights on the table to give a flatter effect. I also painted out a small area of the shadow cast by the mask because it was drifting off the edge of the picture. The grey on one part of the background was sampled and used as a base colour for the spine and back cover.
About the story, on the back page was actual text from the original cover as was the information about the author. The bar code was scavenged off the web, the ISBN taken from another book and the publisher name and website information are genuine.
