Critical Book Clubs: Reimagining Literature Reading and Response SLIDESMANIA. COM In this article, Samantha Shealy, a third-grade teacher and Robin Jocius, a university-based researcher design a way to have critical book clubs. They use a process much like the Gradual Release model on how they teach the children to interact with the books and each other. “Project ONEE illustrates the potential of developing critical book clubs that allow students to wonder about, connect to, critique, and interrogate texts” (Jocius & Shealy, 2018, p. 700).
The Peritext Book Club: Reading to Foster Critical Thinking about STEAM Texts In this article students in a book club were asked to look at the peritext elements of the STEAM books that they read every month. The findings were that using peritext in “educational contexts can aid students’ assessments of information presented in nonfiction texts” (Gross et al. , 2016, p. 14). SLIDESMANIA. COM
Engaging Teens in Recreational Reading through Book Clubs In this article Heard discusses how she started book clubs with her students “to promote recreational reading, the last thing I wanted my club to feel like was another English class analyzing text” (Heard, 2015). She created a book club that was during lunch where the students interacted with text in various ways and that is how she got the students to keep coming back and to enjoy recreational reading.
