SCIENTIFIC NAME • The bony fish is in the class of Osteichthyes. • Bony fish : salmon , carp , tuna Over 20, 000 different species
What they eat? • Bony fish have different food preferences , some are herbivores ( plant – eaters) , Some are carnivores ( meat – eaters) , Some are omnivores ( plants and meat-eaters) , Some are detritivores (animals that eat decomposing plants and animals). • As a group , bony fish eat all sizes of plants and animals from microscopic plant plankton to the largest marine animals. • Bony fish diet: • Annelid worms , marine snails , mussels , clams , squids , insects , other fishes and etc. .
Physical characteristics Gills Backbone Paired fins Single loop circulation Two chamber heart Size males reach just 15 m and females reach only about 9 m there are larger sizes as well. • bony fish have two types of fins lobe finned and ray finned. • • •
How they reproduce? • Sperm and egg developed in separate male and female individuals. • Males and females may look similar or they made look very different. • Bony fish are hermaphrodites which means a single individual can produce both sperm and egg
Behavior • Many species spend most of their time lying on the ocean bottom. • They swim continually. • Some bony fish species are most active at dawn and dusk.
HABITAT • Bony fishes are found in every type of aquatic environment. • lakes • Rivers • Tropical rivers and polar oceans
Bony Fish Anatomy • There are two types of bony fish: ray finned and lobe finned. 1 -Ray finned: • Most present day fish. 2 -Lobe finned fish • Ancestors of amphibians
Fish respiration • Water flows over gills as fish opens mouth and swims. • Water flows opposite direction of blood flow. • O 2 diffuses from the water into the blood. • Gills are made of thousands of gill filament. • Gill are covered by the operculum.
Fish circulation • Fish heart has 2 chambers • Single loop circulation • Blood flows into gills , picks up o 2 , goes to the body , returns to the heart.
Interesting information • The bony fish have a skeleton that is made up of bone. • You can see , bony fish have a protective covering of scales which are loosely attached to the skin and can even rub off in your hands. • Certain species of bony fish can migrate from fresh water to the salt water and still survive.
