Bone spurs on scapula soft tissue ossification What
Bone spurs on scapula (soft tissue ossification)
What is it? • Ossification or hardening of tissues on the scapular surface • Can cause pain alongside many other complications • Usually occurs near the suprascapular notch which is located medial to coracoid process
How does it happen? • Ossification can result from: • • • Trauma Surgery Dislocations Fractures Burns
Presentation • Localized inflammation • Limited range of motion • Possibly a palpable mass • Joint (shoulder) pain • Muscle spasms
Examination/How to diagnose? • CT-scan • Three-Phase Bone Scan • X-rays • Ultrasound • Palpation • Range of motion assessment
Treatment Options • Medications to control abnormal ossification • Range of motion exercises • Surgery can be performed if ossification is significant • Radiation can be performed to eliminate excessive growth
