Integumentary System • Skin is the major organ • Also contains 3 layers of tissue: – Epidermis-outer layer – Dermis- “true skin”, contains blood vessels and lymph – Hypodermis- made up of fatty tissue
Functions - Protection- from sun, bacteria - Sensory perception – sense pain, cold , warmth, etc. - Temperature regulation – help body retain or lose heat by dilating and constricting - Storage- stores fat, glucose, water, vitamins, and salts - Absorption- medications - Excretion- perspiration - Production- vitamin D from the sun
Pigments • Albino – absence of pigmentation • Erythema – reddish color of the skin due to burns or a congestion of blood in the vessels • Jaundice – yellowish skin due to and increase of bile in the blood due to liver or gall bladder disease • Cyanosis – bluish discoloration caused by insufficient O 2 or poisoning
Diseases/Conditions of the Integumentary System • Acne vulgaris- inflammation of sebaceous glands; cause unknown • Athlete’s foot- fungal infection • Skin cancer- basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, malignant melanoma • Dermatitis- from cosmetics or anything that irritates the skin • Eczema-inflammation caused by an allergen
Diseases/Conditions of the Integumentary System • Impetigo – skin infection caused by strep or staph • Psoriasis – noncontagious, inherited skin disease, white silver scales • Ringworm- highly contagious fungal infection • Verrucae – warts, caused by a viral infection
