Body Paragraph The “Basic Parts”
Why Do We Need a Body Paragraph? § allows you to convince the reader through facts and reasoning that your view is the one to believe § provides all the necessary support for thesis statement from your introductory paragraph
First Part – Tells What the paragraph’s all about… § Also called the Topic Sentence § Tells the reader what you’ll be talking about in the paragraph… § Example: One of the main reasons that Pitman should have an open campus is that students need to be allowed the freedom that all other American’s have.
Second Part… § Tells the reader something that supports your opinion. § It could be: § Facts (statistics, etc. ) § Quotations from sources § Examples from the text § Example: Eighty-five percent of students given the choice for lunch exhibited greater effort in their academics according to the Educator Weekly.
Third Part… § So what? Tell the reader what that information (fact, example, quote) proves! § Example: These statistics make it clear that allowing students to choose helps to develop a more responsible student over time.
Fourth Part… § Can you give additional explanation to convince them? § Example: Students first need to be given an opportunity to mature before their growth will happen.
The Final Part… (Concluding Sentence) § Remind the reader of your opinion at the beginning of this paragraph. § Use new words to restate the Topic Sentence. § Example: Being an American is a privilege and it seems only fair that high school students be allowed to experience this freedom like all other citizens of the United States.
