Definition Body language is a kind of non-verbal communication , where thoughts, intentions, or feelings are expressed by physical behaviors, such as facial expressions , body posture, gestures, eye movement, touch and the use of space. Body language exists in both animals and humans.

FACIAL EXPRESSIONSSMILE Ø Face is the index of mind. Ø The eyes, the lips and the muscles express many feelings. Ø It can also be deceived by manipulation.

HAPPINESS This is perhaps the most universal emotion that is shown in the same way across various cultures.

It is expressed with a smile and crescent-shaped eyes that may be demonstrated even by babies. Although one may show his teeth in a smile, it does not show fear, but shows that one is feeling well. Smiles are typically attractive because they show some degree of self-sufficiency or strength.

SMILE & SOCIAL EFFECTS A smile seems to have a favorable influence upon others and makes one likable and more approachable. In the social context, smiling and laughter have different functions in social situations: Smiling is not a pre-laughing device and is a common pattern for paving the way to laughter.

Smiling can be used as a response to laughter. Smiling is a signaling system that developed from a need to communicate information of many different forms. i. e. instead of greeting someone

LANGUAGE Dominance: Dominance body language is related to aggressive body language, though with a less emotional content. Size signals The body in dominant stances is generally open, and may also include additional aspects. • Making the body big Hands on hips makes the elbows go wide and make the body seem larger. So also does standing upright and erect, with the chin up and the chest pushed out. Legs may be placed apart to increase size. • Making the body seem taller Height is also important as it gives an attack advantage. This can be achieved by standing up straight or somehow getting the other person lower than you, for example by putting them on a lower seat or by your standing on a step or pedestal.

Superiority signals § Ownership Owning something that others want provides a status symbol. This can be territorial, such as a larger office, or displays of wealth or power, such as a Rolex watch or having many people working under you. § Just owning things is an initial symbol, but in body language it is showing these off, that is the power display. Thus a senior manager will casually take out their Mont Blanc pen while telling their secretary to bring him the Havana cigars.

§ Dominant positions A dominant person will take higher status physical positions where they can see and be seen by more other people.

§ Facial signals Much dominance can be shown in the face, from disapproving frowns and pursed lips to sneers and snarls (sometimes disguised as smiles). The eyes can be used to stare and hold the gaze for long period. They may also squint, preventing the other person seeing where you are looking. They may also look at anywhere but the other person, thus saying that 'you are not even worth looking at'. Narrowing eyes shows suspicion or even dislike.

Size Dominant individuals will make gestures and postulate themselves to increase their size. This is even seen in the animal kingdom, for example when alpha male birds fan their feathers, or cats fluff out their tails. In humans, aggression can be shown by placing the hands on the hips, standing tall at maximum height and sitting themselves close to those they want to scare.

Human Postures Biting of nails : Nail biting demonstrates nervousness, stress, or insecurity. Many people bite nails without realizing they have the habit. Hand on cheek : This body language example indicates that one is lost in thought, maybe considering something. When your hand is on your cheek you may be in deep concentration. Arms crossed in front of the chest : This is one of the body language examples that indicate that one is being defensive. The body language meaning of crossed arms may also show disagreement with opinions and actions of other people with whom you are communicating Open palms, facing upward : This gesture is a sign of honesty, sincerity, submission, and innocence. This is how some people show submission and respect during church worship.

Discomfort Signals Neck Touching or Neck Rubbing : When people are uncomfortable, they will unconsciously touch their necks so that these nerves will activate and help to calm them. Leg Rubbing : This is where a seated person puts their hands (or hand) palmdown on their legs and slides it towards their knees. Picture someone wiping off sweaty palms on their pants and you've got the idea. Very Little Eye Contact: Nobody maintains eye contact all the time, but when they look away they should soon look back to you. If someone is looking everywhere but you, they're probably not comfortable. Feet Pointed Away: Feet are extremely powerful indicators of how someone is actually feeling. If someone's feet are pointed away from their conversation partner, that's often a signal that they'd rather exit the conversation

The Body Language of attraction Once we decide we like someone , the body automatically begins changing physically to signal attraction: • Leaning toward the person shows interest and engagement – leaning away signals dislike or withdrawal. • Head tilting also shows interest and engagement , but looking over someone’s head, avoiding eye contact and looking around signals lack of interest or you are shy.

• • Racing heart. If you’re attracted to someone, your heart rate rises. Feet and knees pointed to the person. If your feet are pointed directly at someone, it’s a sign of attraction or interest. If they’re pointed off to the side, it indicates lack of interest.
