Goals for today (us) 1. ) Get an idea for either a capstone science class or inclusion of forensics activities in a regular science class. 2. ) Show supports/techniques that lead to student engagement. 3. ) Be introduced to at least one way of planning a semester long forensics activity. 4. ) Time to create a basic outline of a forensic class/activity.
Goals for our students with Art Heist 1. ) Students will be exposed to multiple real life applications of science, and the importance of following the scientific method. 2. ) Students will have fun and enjoy science! 3. ) Students will see how biology, physics, and chemistry are related, and are not completely separate identities. 4. ) Students will develop high levels of personal accountability focusing on agency and collaboration. 5. ) Student engagement not only with our class, but to create a buzz and work with other classes
The challenge Electives for senior year Freshman- Biology Sophomore- Physics Junior- Chemistry Senior- ? ? ? Science Elective to act as a capstone Help prepare some juniors before high stakes testing Help prepare students for college and career readiness with a focus on technical writing and the scientific method
The backdrop of the project Breaking and entering- New Tech staff member Great relationships with students (how guilty? ) Art heist, small pieces of art that have “real” and “fake” characteristics Easy to steal, and testable Working crime scene throughout the project. Scene set up in the room next door (great for management) Culmination with C. R. A. and Trial
How to assess K&T? Main deliverables Are activities that demonstrate direct targets from rubrics. Can be both group and individual. Are graded against the same rubrics that the main C. R. A. will be graded on. Are worth more points. Receive major feedback for scaffolding purposes. Secondary deliverables Include daily activities (small journals, openers, and closers) Include small problem sets Include mini comprehension quizzes Are not worth as many points Do not require as much feedback
How to assess Agency? 40% participation for the week Volunteer in class, turning in work, being engaged in class 60% agency notebook (Oops notebook) Pick each category of the agency rubric, evaluate yourself, provide evidence in how you grew in that facet Checked 4 times in the semester
Pre-Project Activities Team building and useful info (1 week) Egg Drop (with materials draft) Marshmallow tower (spaghetti and marshmallows) Dream forensics class College talk/ info scholarships Critical thinking problems Science boot camp (1 week) Basic math day Bio review day Chemistry review day Physics review day Ray Krone story Ray Krone- 100 th inmate Exonerated from death row
Phase 1 of project Project roll out Entry doc, knows and N 2 K’s, next steps, and group contracts Mock crime scene practice (growth opportunity) How to handle evidence Bag and tag, chain of custody How to be detailed and careful
Phase 1 of project Introduction to the crime scene Importance of securing the crime scene Photographing the entire crime scene Complete bag and tag Scaled drawings Take evidence for testing if necessary Fingerprinting
Deliverables for Phase 1 Group Assessments Individual Assessments Picture description Accurate crime scene assignment for room (digital portfolio) Evidence numbering and descriptions Evidence board- start creation of “CSI” string board sketch focusing on scale, units, and measurement techniques. IAKT- finger and handprint analysis Daily Journal Who did it and why assignment
Phase 2 of project Prosecution and defense selection ½ class prosecution for honors credit ½ class defense for regular credit
Phase 2 of project Working crime scene (Lab testing) Testing paintings- UV light (fluorescent paint) Brushstroke lab Paint analysis (digital melter) Hair analysis found from crime scene Height analysis (from video) Recreation video lab Handwriting analysis (threatening note) Search warrant workshop Ink/ paper analysis
Phase 2 of project The Interview and Questioning process Focus on evidence, not hearsay) Defense meets with defendant Prosecution meets with witnesses/people who interact with suspect
Deliverables for phase 2 Group Assessments Individual Assessments Lab participation Post lab summary and Evidence board questions for each lab Interview question sets Handwriting analysis findings Daily journal (almost complete) Documented interviews and evidence collection Agency and collaboration evaluations for prosecution and defense teams.
Phase 3 of project Trial prep Completely student centered Each team got their own room to work in Need to know protocol revisit Workshops on courtroom operating procedure and how to build a case (argument structure) Guest lawyer and police officer came to answer questions Mock Trial-practice of parts, re-order topics if need be Formatting into one presentation Feedback from staff/students not involved in trial
Phase 3 of project C. R. A. crime scene Serves as an almost Holds students Peer review and Focuses on Builds on information Highlights ability to Main part of the grade report accountable for all science content found and used in labs argumentation of case include data tables/ multimedia into report writing portfolio for the project feedback sections help bolster prosecution and defense team cases used in previous IAKT’s for the entire class
Phase 3 of project The website caseofthemissingart. weeb ly. com B. N. T. media class Win-win (focus on reporting and oral comm. ) Spread around to all of B. N. T. Up to date trial prep, interviews of “ forensic experts from class” Up to the minute trial information and reaction
Phase 3 of project The Trial
Phase 3 of project
Phase 3 of the project Judge- Our school principal (former lawyer) Jury- Staff and students not involved in the case (were given jury duty forms) Rented out media center Facilitators called to stand able to get out of class Audience of other Parts of trial assigned by students in their teams 4 days long classes and media class Entire trial filmed, and available for any jury member not available
Phase 3 of the project The verdict – Not guilty!!!!!
What went well, and not so well Warm Great student engagement High level of pride in work Student to student accountability Several examples of above and beyond effort (video drawings etc. ) Science knowledge gained was above average for our science classes. Engaged students not in Cool Some student parts were not as well done as others Time management with seniors Some thought too much writing Need for better systems for keeping all info and sources together for writing C. R. A. and trial More knowledge of trials and law is super helpful
How to plan 1. ) Browse some forensics kits online to get brainstorming. Flinn, Carolina etc. . 2. ) Pick topics that can go together 1. ) Art forgery kit 2. ) Thin layer chromatography ink analysis kit 3. ) Paper and handwriting analysis kit 4. ) Finger and handprint kit 3. ) Estimate time for each
Brainstorm part 2 Two focus areas Start thinking of deliverables that are built on these focus areas Start to think what activities would be needed to scaffold these activities
Brainstorm part 3 resources Meet with your staff for ideas/ contacts Talk with your school officer/ local police department about class activities they can do Look for local crime labs, lawyers/judges, other criminal justice branches Revisit project ideas and select activities that can be impactful
Let’s try to plan a project Start- pick one or two focus areas. Evidence-based argumentation Scientific method Technical writing Evaluation of sources Scientific explanation skills Pick a type of crime Homicide Breaking and entering Cyber?
Let’s try to plan a project Project planning form bntwatkinsforensics. weebly. com 3 -5 minute prewrite (1 st brainstorm) What do I think of when I think of forensics? 3 minutes (2 nd brainstorm) How can I relate these topics? 4 minutes (3 rd brainstorm) Labs and activities brainstorm
Let’s try to plan a project Put it all together 10 -15 minutes (fill out rest of form and write a brief synopsis) Share out (CFG) protocol
