BNL FNAL LBNL SLAC IR Commissioning Task Above
BNL -FNAL - LBNL - SLAC IR Commissioning* Task • Above Ground Mechanical Fitup • Installation Oversight and • Hardware Commissioning of US Deliverables *Really Installation and commissioning Goal is to get US deliverables operational LARP mini-collaboration meeting October 5, 2005 IR Hardware Commissioning M. Lamm 1
Successful Above-Ground Fitup of US Deliverables LHC Assembly Building March-April 2005 • D 1 (BNL) • DFBX (LBNL) • Inner Triplet (FNAL) • Purpose of Test • Assemble all pieces for one complete IR • Mechanical fitup of interconnects • Pipes adjustments to install length, dry fit • Vacuum tests Participants: Joseph Rasson (LBNL), Rodger Bossert, Joe Dimarco, Phil • Shields, interconnect kits Pfund, Tom Page, Tom Nicol, Jim Rife, • Magnets on alignment jacks Michael Lamm (FNAL) • Electrical continuity LARP mini-collaboration meeting October 5, 2005 IR Hardware Commissioning M. Lamm 2
Latest Word on Installation and Commission Schedule • Working Schedule was: – Commissioning of IR 8 L magnets in December 2005 -January 2006 – Complete Installation of section 7 -8 8 -1 by June 2006; commission sectors – Use experience to fine tune commissioning plan for rest of LHC – First Beam Summer 2007 • New Schedule – No special IR 8 L commissioning – June 2006 is the first commissioning – First Beam Summer 2007 ? ? ? LARP mini-collaboration meeting October 5, 2005 IR Hardware Commissioning M. Lamm 3
Impact on Installation • Time Frame: First sector Spring 2006, throughout FY 2006, 07? • Check mechanical/vacuum/cryo connections • Check installation procedures • Review electrical and alignment data • Installation bugs worked out in Mechanical Fitup • Because of delay of commissioning till spring 2006 we may try to tie schedule for FNAL participation to completion of construction project (i. e. till March 2006) • Level of Effort FY 6 -7 • ~1/3 FTE on First sector • Less on subsequent sectors (but non zero based on fitup) • Main Participants • Mechanical Engineers (Rasson, Page, Nicol, Bossert, Plate…. ) • Main CERN Contacts • Ranko Ostojic AT-MEL and Interconnect team in AT-CRI LARP mini-collaboration meeting October 5, 2005 IR Hardware Commissioning M. Lamm 4
Installation Preparation • Bi-weekly teleconference between US and CERN • Ranko Ostojic AT-MEL and Interconnect team in AT-CRI • Resource planning for Installation • i. e. Magnet delivery schedule, LHC schedule updates • Finishing stages of detailed installation procedures, drawings, parts lists, installation tooling LARP mini-collaboration meeting October 5, 2005 IR Hardware Commissioning M. Lamm 5
Commissioning • Full Commissioning Task Starts Spring 2006 – Some participation through short visits and possibly through remote monitoring (see LHC@FNAL talk) – Peter Limon starts 1 year stay in November 2005 – Two additional people lined up to live at CERN in CY 2006 • Cryogenic Expert (1) – Experienced in Superfluid testing of US Magnets • Magnet Physicist – Magnet powering, quench protection • Expected Hardware Commissioning completion in Summer 2007 • Small carryover into beam commissioning to study dynamic heat loads on magnets and cryosystem (radiation damage? ) – Important tool for design of IR upgrades LARP mini-collaboration meeting October 5, 2005 IR Hardware Commissioning M. Lamm 6
Conclusion and Comments • • We have a well defined program for FY 06 – Change in scheduling does not substantially change our plans – Inner triplet HC contribution is established – More emphassis on installation in early FY 06, more emphasis on HC planning at CERN. – Change in scheduling does not significantly change overall budget Importance of following through on performance of US deliverables during beam operation : Important feedback to IR upgrades – Validate magnet cooling schemes – Radiation damage laboratory – Validate shielding, energy deposition models LARP mini-collaboration meeting October 5, 2005 IR Hardware Commissioning M.
