Bluetooth based hands-free mobile ticketing minipilot in Helsinki Andres Birnbaum | CEO T solutions OÜ
What is Jiffi? Jiffi is a perfect mobile BIBO ticketing solution that: • uses Bluetooth Smart (BLE) and micro-location technology • detects when smartphoneequipped passengers step into and out of public transport vehicle • bills them automatically according to the actual use of the service 2017 www. jiffiapp. com 3
How does it work? 2017 www. jiffiapp. com 4
Minipilot Ambitions • Original objectives for the mini pilot: • Jiffi Be-In-Be-Out (BIBO) testing • How reliable is Jiffi validation algorithm in new environment? • Tram installation testing • We did this first time ever! • New beacon setup testing • different vehicle dimensions than regular bus 2017 www. jiffiapp. com 5
Piloting, process • When and where? • Tram nr 81, line nr 9 • Tram depot Hämeentie 86 • By whom? • Pilot user group of ~10 people • Jiffi project team of ~5 people • How did they like the solution? • The aim was mostly technical, not UI 2017 www. jiffiapp. com 6
What was done? Time 27. 02. 2017 Workshop Activity First introduction, inspection of tram in the depo Preparation for hardware installation (Jiffi) Searching for right pilot tram (FVH) 3 -4. 4. 2017 Workshop Cabling work, installing all hardware (Jiffi) Development of test application (Jiffi) 25. 04. 2017 Workshop Configuration and initial testing (Jiffi) Solving some technical issues (Jiffi) 02. 05. 2017 Workshop Second testing (Jiffi) Writing testing manual (Jiffi) 10. 05. 2017 Workshop Final testing, training of super user (Jiffi/FVH) Test group training (FVH), collecting user data Workshop in the future 2017 Presentation of data analysis results www. jiffiapp. com 7
Piloting, users • Did we do end-user testing? • We installed Jiffi test application in their phone • Short training session • Test application sends data to back-end for analysis • How many users we had? • Currently ~10 test users from close circle • How did the user trials went? Technical barriers, enablers? • First tests went well • User pilot ongoing • Challenge: How users can chase tram #81 on line no 9 ? 2017 www. jiffiapp. com 8

Lessons Learned: Piloting • Top 3 things we learned regarding getting the pilot done • As tram has 12 beacons (bus has 5 -7) then we have use different cabling approach using central hub which monitors each thread • Tram and bus are not so different in Jiffi technical perspective • Considerable difference between old and modern trams regarding cabling and installation • What went well in getting the pilot done? • Our current Jiffi algorithm is scalable to larger vehicles • What was difficult in getting the pilot done? • • Decision to allow the installation took more time than expected Solving technical issues (communication module) Chasing tram for installation work and testing Finding time for our team – „fortunately“ tram was constantly in maintenance • What was surprising? • We expected that tram high voltage devices will bring some trouble to our signal but the testing didn’t show any issues 2017 www. jiffiapp. com 12
Lessons Learned: Solution • Did the solution work as envisioned? • Yes, it is working in this pilot scope • What did the users say? • We will collect feedback in few weeks • Did it affect the mobility flows? • In scope of next pilot • How would you improve the solution? • Real passenger application (in progress) • New cabling approach • New communication module 2017 www. jiffiapp. com 113
Company’s ambitions with the solution • Will you continue development of your solution after the mini pilot? • Yes in new pilots and in City of Tartu • How and when? • We will use lessons learned in our Tartu project • • New beacon design On-board base station design New smarter cabling architecture Improved monitoring solution • What do you do with test users or the result material besides the mini pilot? • Use as input in City of Tartu project • Improve algorithm based on the data gathered on tram 2017 www. jiffiapp. com 14
Insights for larger pilots • 1 -3 main things that we should consider when procuring the larger pilots • Testing user experience and potential social benefits should be next main goal • Entire line or path coverage to test multi-leg trips • e. g. Länsisatama harbour to Vantaa airport • Real application with real payment options • Large pilot group, longer period • Technical improvements • Improvements in equipment set-up stability • Improved Jiffi equipment monitoring solution because of longer period • Testing all available phones • Pilot project management and processes including • Improved methodology for equipment installation • Training and communication plan • These could be requirements, barriers, features, new ideas, better objectives • We have not tested all Android phone versions (potential technical barrier) • Possible certification requirements (e. g. trains) • Integrations with existing fare collection systems (financial & technical) 2017 www. jiffiapp. com 15
