Benjamin Bloom Developed a system of classifying (taxonomy) educational objectives into three domains: 1. Cognitive 2. Affective 3. Psychomotor For this discussion we will only be concerned with the cognitive domain
Bloom’s Taxonomy Order of Thinking Skills Benjamin Bloom classified cognitive educational objects (what the student will know or do) into six domains or levels of thinking.
The Six Levels of Bloom’s Taxonomy in the Cognitive Domain: 1. Knowledge 2. Comprehension 3. Application 4. Analysis 5. Synthesis 6. Evaluate
Knowledge Level The basic recollection of facts or information: Define, Identify, List, Describe, Match, Locate List the six levels or domains of Bloom’s Taxonomy.
Comprehension Level Grasp and explain an idea or concepts: Explain, Summarize, Interpret, Give Example of. In your own words explain the knowledge and comprehension level of Bloom’s Taxonomy.
Application Level Selecting a concept or skill and using it to solve a problem: Demonstrate, Show, Construct, Apply, Solve Given what you know about Bloom’s Taxonomy, write three instructional objectives that demonstrate each of the following: a) the knowledge level b) the comprehension level c) the application level
Analysis Level Information is broken down into distinguishing parts : Compare, Contrast, Categorize, Distinguish Compare and contrast the four levels of Bloom’s Taxonomy which have been presented at this point and classify each as to higher or lower order thinking skills.
Synthesis Level New patterns and structures are formulated. Creative thinking used to form original products: Create, Design, Imagine Develop a project idea that will require your students to use the Synthesis Level of thinking. Create ways to include information from previous lessons to meet the needs and leaning strengths of all of your students. Formulate a rubric to use in the evaluation of the project that considers the synthesis level of thinking.
Evaluation Level Judgments of value are made based on defined criteria: Judge, Support, Debate Defend your project and rubric creation with a partner. After each has taken a turn, critique each other’s work based on the criteria. Select one of the two project ideas to recommend and justify your selection.
