Blood Supply of Brain ARTERIES OF BRAIN 4
Blood Supply of Brain
ARTERIES OF BRAIN • 4 th part of the vertebral artery enters the cranium through foramen magnum under the free margin of posterior atlanto -occipital membrane. Arteries of two sides join to form single median basilar artery on the ventral aspect of pons.
BASILAR ARTERY Branches 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. Anterior inferior cerebellar artery: Labyrinthine artery: Pontine branches: Superior cerebellar artery: Two terminal posterior cerebral branches diverge at upper border of pons: Branches of Posterior Cerebral Arteries 1. Posteromedial central branches: 2. Posterior choroidal artery: 3. Cortical branches,
Arteries related to brain stem
Posterior cerebral artery on: a) Inferior surface of left cerebral hemisphere, and b) medial surface of right cerebral hemisphere
INTERNAL CAROTID ARTERY Each internal carotid artery enters the cranial cavity after traversing the carotid canal. Branches 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. Ophthalmic artery Posterior communicating artery: Anterior choroidal artery: Anterior cerebral artery: Middle cerebral artery:
Medial surface of right cerebral hemisphere with anterior cerebral artery
(a) Deep branches of middle cerebral artery, and (b) cortical branches of middle cerebral artery
CIRCULUS ARTERIOSUS OR CIRCLE OF WILLIS • It is a hexagonal arterial circle, situated at the base of brain in the interpeduncular fossa. • It is formed by the anterior cerebral branches of internal carotid, terminal parts of internal carotid arteries and the posterior cerebral branches of basilar artery.
FORMATION • Anteriorly: Anterior communicating artery joining the two anterior cerebral arteries. • Anterolaterally: Anterior cerebral arteries. • Laterally: Internal carotid arteries. • Posterolaterally: Posterior communicating arteries • Posteriorly: Posterior cerebral arteries
Circle of Willis and the branches of arteries supplying the brain
Arterial supply of superolateral surface of cerebral hemisphere
Arterial supply of medial and tentorial surfaces of cerebral hemisphere
Arterial supply of inferior surface of cerebral hemisphere
ARTERIAL SUPPLY OF DIFFERENT AREAS Cerebellum is supplied by following arteries: • Superior cerebellar • Anterior inferior cerebellar • Posterior inferior cerebellar
VEINS OF THE CEREBRUM GROUPS OF VEINS External Cerebral Veins • Superior cerebral veins: • Superficial middle cerebral vein • Deep middle cerebral vein • Inferior cerebral veins • Anterior cerebral veins Internal Cerebral Veins Terminal Veins • Great cerebral vein • Basal vein
Veins on the superolateral surface of cerebral hemisphere
Veins on the inferior surface of cerebral hemisphere
