Blood Our body’s most important substance
Blood: The Parts • • Plasma Red Blood Cells (Erythrocytes) White Blood Cells (Leukocytes) Platelets
Blood: The Plasma • • Makes up 55% of blood Mostly water Yellowish in color Plasma proteins: • Regulate blood volume • Transport substances • Help with clotting
Blood: Red blood cells • • • Called erythrocytes Most numerous blood cells Job is to CARRY OXYGEN • RED = HOLDING OXYGEN • BLUE = GAVE OXYGEN TO CELLS • Hemoglobin: Very special protein • Contains IRON (HEME!) • Binds oxygen in lungs • Neat fact: RBC’s do not have a nucleus!
Blood: White Blood Cells • • • Called leukocytes Much less abundant but LARGE Different types • Ex. Phagocytes • Job: • Work with immune system to attack foreign baddies
Blood: Platelets • • Work with plasma proteins to help CLOT BLOOD Become “sticky” when blood vessel is broken
Platelets: The Video Clip
Blood Types • Each contains different proteins • Makes donating and receiving blood complicated! • 4 blood types: • • Type A: contains “A” protein Type B: contains “B” protein Type AB: contains both “A” and “B” proteins Type O: contains NO proteins
Blood Types: Donating and Receiving • Type A: • Donates to: A AND AB • Receives from: A or O • Type B: • • • Donates to: B AND AB Receives from: B or O Type AB: • Donates to: AB only • Receives from: A, B, AB, or O • UNIVERSAL RECIPIENT! • Type O: • Donates to: A, B, AB, or O • UNIVERSAL DONOR! • Receives from: O only
