Is blood donation risky? ❖ Blood donation is safe for healthy adults. ❖ There’s no risk of contracting disease. ❖ New, sterile equipment is used for each donor. 1
Side effects of donating blood ❖ Some people may feel sick or dizzy after donating blood. If this happens, it should only last a few minutes. You can lie down with your feet up until you feel better. 2 ❖ You may also experience some bleeding at the site of the needle. Applying pressure and raising your arm for a couple of minutes will usually stop this. You may develop a bruise at the site. 1
Call the blood donation center if: ● You still feel sick or dizzy after drinking, eating and resting ● You develop a raised bump or continue bleeding at the needle site ● You have arm pain, numbness or tingling

Who can donate blood to me?
If you want to be a donor ● You need to be 18 (depending on the country) to donate whole blood. 2 Some countries allow you to donate at 16 if parents agree. ● You have to weigh at least 50 kilos (depending on the country) and be in good health to donate. 1 ● You need to provide information about medical conditions and any medicines you’re taking. These may influence if you can donate blood or not. 2 ● You must wait at least 6 months if you had surgery, tattoo, ear piercing or other parts of the body 1 ● You must wait at least 8 weeks (women) or 6 weeks (men) between whole blood donations. 2
Why to donate blood? A lot of people are waiting for you - you can save their life 1
There are some tips to help you prepare for donating blood: ● Drink an extra a half a litre of water before your appointment. ● Eat a healthy meal that’s low in fat. ● Wear a short-sleeved shirt or a shirt with sleeves that are easy to roll up. 2
Before the donation You must register to donate blood ❖ provide identification and your medical history ❖ have a quick physical check-ups You’ll also be given some information about blood donation to read. 1
When you’re ready, your blood donation process will begin. ❖ You’ll be seated in a reclining chair. You can donate blood either sitting or lying down. 2
❖ A small area of your arm will be cleaned. A sterile needle will then be inserted. 1 ❖ You’ll remain seated or lying down while almost half a litre of your blood is drawn. This takes 8 to 10 minutes. 2 ❖ When your blood has been collected, a staff member will remove the needle and put a dressing on your arm 1
When your donation is complete, you’ll be given a snack (in Poland chocolate) and a drink and be able to sit and rest for 10 or 15 minutes before you leave. 2 If you feel faint or dizzy, you’ll be able to lie down until you feel better. 1
Myths And Facts About Blood Donation Donating a unit of blood doesn’t harm your body because your body produces 2 million red blood cells every second. Blood donation doesn’t mean risking your life but it is your contribution towards saving lives. 1

Isn’t it shocking that about 60% of the population is able to donate blood, but less than 4% do ! There are various myths that stop men and women from donating blood 1
Myth 1: Blood donation is a painful process. Fact: Blood donation is not at all painful. It only involves a needle prick and temporary discomfort. Myth 2: Blood donation causes blood deficiency Fact: Blood donation doesn’t cause blood deficiency. The blood volume will be the same within 48 hours. If the person has good eating habits they can donate blood four times a year.
Myth 3: People with diabetes can’t donate blood Fact: People with diabetes can donate blood as long as their sugar level is right. Myth 4: Blood donation leads to obesity Fact: People who eat more and avoid exercise after donating blood may gain weight. Blood donation directly doesn’t result in weight gain.
Myth 5: There is risk of getting exposed to dangerous infections like HIV Fact: A person will not face the risk of getting exposed to infections like HIV until they make sure that the needle used are sterilized or new.
