We are 40 NYS Licensed Medical Technologists and 4 Licensed Medical Physicians who specialize in Blood Banking, Transfusion Medicine, and Stem Cell Processing. What is the Blood Bank and Transfusion Medicine Unit? We are a highly regulated Clinical Laboratory. We perform many specialized tests such as blood type ABORh, compatibility testing of blood products, and investigation & ID of complex antibodies. We also manage all aspects of the blood inventory to provide appropriate, safe & timely products for transfusion. What is the Stem Cell Lab? A Clinical Laboratory within Transfusion Medicine. We process, store, and prepare bone marrow and stem cells that are transplanted to patient’s who have cancer of the blood and bone marrow. We operate 24 hrs a day, 365 days a year. Plasma (55% of total blood) -contains clotting factor proteins Platelets (< 1% of total blood) -help form a clot to stop bleeding Red Blood Cells (45% of total blood) -carries fresh oxygen throughout the body All of our blood and products come from the American Red Cross and the community blood supply comes from volunteer donors like you. What’s Your Type? We transfuse @ 35, 000 products a year! Our Transfusion Medicine Unit provides 100% leukoreduced and ABO type specific products to all patients. We also perform many other modifications to meet the specific needs of our patient population (irradiate, wash, volume deplete, small aliquots, syringes). What do we do? We support the transfusion needs of patients undergoing surgery, organ transplant, cancer treatment, trauma patients, pediatrics and newborns…. to name a few. We perform about 170, 000 tests per year! Our Medical Staff and Blood Management Nurse provide education and consults to assist care providers with transfusion needs for patient care.
