Torah Study Book of II John Truth Part 1 II John 1: 1 -2 12/18/2019
2 John 1 -2 (CJB) 1 From: The Elder To: The chosen lady and her children, whom I love in truth — and not only I but also all who have come to know the truth — 2 because of the Truth which remains united with us and will be with us forever:
He is writing to warn and encourage these leaders in their responsibilities to the Messianic community of which they were part.
Problem: False teaching existed that sought to draw people away from their faith in Yeshua, perhaps with the idea that denying Yeshua would protect them from Roman persecution against atheists!
John writes in order to strengthen and encourage the believers to remain firm in their confession regardless of the cost!
2 John 1 -2 (CJB) 1 From: The Elder To: The chosen lady and her children, whom I love in truth — and not only I but also all who have come to know the truth — 2 because of the Truth which remains united with us and will be with us forever:
Elder. . . he is doing two things: 1. He is identifying himself as one together with others “elders” who have accepted the duties of leadership within a local assemble of believers in Yeshua! 2. Reminding them he is the last living Apostle who walked with Yeshua, and he speaks with the authority of Yeshua.
In Apostolic Scriptures there were primarily two offices: Overseer (episkopos) Deacon (diakonos) General term for elder in Hebrew: zakein, masc. / ziqnah, fem. which is translated into Elder in English.
EXTRA: The English word “assembly” is actually the meaning of the Greek word synagogue!
Acts 14: 23 (CJB) 23 After appointing elders for them in every congregation, Sha’ul and Bar-Nabba, with prayer and fasting, committed them to the Lord in whom they had put their trust. Acts 15: 22 -23 (CJB) 22 Then the emissaries and the elders, together with the whole Messianic community, decided to select men from among themselves to send to Antioch with Sha’ul and Bar-Nabba. They sent Y’hudah, called Bar-Sabba, and Sila, both leading men among the brothers, 23 with the following letter: From: The emissaries and the elders, your brothers To: The brothers from among the Gentiles throughout Antioch, Syria and Cilicia 1 Timothy 5: 17 (CJB) 17 The leaders who lead well should be considered worthy of double honor, especially those working hard at communicating the Word and at teaching. Acts 20: 28 (CJB) 28 “Watch out for yourselves, and for all the flock in which the Ruach Ha. Kodesh has placed you as leaders, to shepherd God’s Messianic community, which he won for himself at the cost of his own Son’s blood. Philippians 1: 1 (CJB) 1 From: Sha’ul and Timothy, slaves of the Messiah Yeshua To: All God’s people united with the Messiah Yeshua and living in Philippi, along with the congregation leaders and shammashim:
1 Timothy 3: 1 -2 (CJB) 3 Here is a statement you can trust: anyone aspiring to be a congregation leader is seeking worthwhile work. 2 A congregation leader must be above reproach, he must be faithful to his wife, temperate, self-controlled, orderly, hospitable and able to teach. Titus 1: 7 -9 (CJB) 7 For an overseer, as someone entrusted with God’s affairs, must be blameless — he must not be self-willed or quicktempered, he must not drink excessively, get into fights or be greedy for dishonest gain. 8 On the contrary, he must be hospitable, devoted to good, sober-mindedness, uprightness, holiness and self-control. 9 He must hold firmly to the trustworthy Message that agrees with the doctrine; so that by his sound teaching he will be able to exhort and encourage, and also to refute those who speak against it.
2 John 1 (CJB) 1 From: The Elder To: The chosen lady and her children, whom I love in truth — and not only I but also all who have come to know the truth — 2 John 2 -3 (CJB) 2 because of the Truth which remains united with us and will be with us forever: 3 Grace, mercy and shalom will be with us from God the Father and from Yeshua the Messiah, the Son of the Father, in truth and love.
