Blessed Jacob Blesses Ephraim and Manasseh Genesis 48
Blessed Jacob Blesses Ephraim and Manasseh Genesis 48 Presented by Bob De. Waay September 3, 2006
A Patriarchal Deathbed Blessing n Genesis 48: 1, 2 Now it came about after these things that Joseph was told, “Behold, your father is sick. ” So he took his two sons Manasseh and Ephraim with him. When it was told to Jacob, “Behold, your son Joseph has come to you, ” Israel collected his strength and sat up in the bed.
Jacob Recounts God’s Promises n Genesis 48: 3, 4 Then Jacob said to Joseph, “God Almighty appeared to me at Luz in the land of Canaan and blessed me, and He said to me, ‘Behold, I will make you fruitful and numerous, and I will make you a company of peoples, and will give this land to your descendants after you for an everlasting possession. ’”
The Promise of “Fruitfulness and Multiplication” Is Fulfilled n Exodus 1: 7 But the sons of Israel were fruitful and increased greatly, and multiplied, and became exceedingly mighty, so that the land was filled with them.
Jacob Adopts His Grandsons n Genesis 48: 5, 6 “And now your two sons, who were born to you in the land of Egypt before I came to you in Egypt, are mine; Ephraim and Manasseh shall be mine, as Reuben and Simeon are. But your offspring that have been born after them shall be yours; they shall be called by the names of their brothers in their inheritance. ”
Jacob’s Heart is in Canaan n Genesis 48: 7 “Now as for me, when I came from Paddan, Rachel died, to my sorrow, in the land of Canaan on the journey, when there was still some distance to go to Ephrath; and I buried her there on the way to Ephrath (that is, Bethlehem). ”
The Patriarchal Blessing n Genesis 48: 8, 9 When Israel saw Joseph's sons, he said, “Who are these? ” And Joseph said to his father, “They are my sons, whom God has given me here. ” So he said, “Bring them to me, please, that I may bless them. ”
God Blessed Jacob Beyond His Expectations n Genesis 48: 10, 11 Now the eyes of Israel were so dim from age that he could not see. Then Joseph brought them close to him, and he kissed them and embraced them. And Israel said to Joseph, “I never expected to see your face, and behold, God has let me see your children as well. ”
Ephraim and Manasseh n Genesis 48: 12, 13 Then Joseph took them from his knees, and bowed with his face to the ground. And Joseph took them both, Ephraim with his right hand toward Israel's left, and Manasseh with his left hand toward Israel's right, and brought them close to him.
Like Jacob and Esau, The Order is Reversed n Genesis 48: 14 But Israel stretched out his right hand laid it on the head of Ephraim, who was the younger, and his left hand on Manasseh's head, crossing his hands, although Manasseh was the first-born.
Jacob Confesses God as His Shepherd n Genesis 48: 15 And he blessed Joseph, and said, “The God before whom my fathers Abraham and Isaac walked, The God who has been my shepherd all my life to this day. . . ”
God Is Jacob’s “Kinsman Redeemer” n Genesis 48: 16 “. . . The angel who has redeemed me from all evil, Bless the lads; And may my name live on in them, And the names of my fathers Abraham and Isaac; And may they grow into a multitude in the midst of the earth. ”
Joseph Attempts to Intervene n Genesis 48: 17, 18 When Joseph saw that his father laid his right hand on Ephraim's head, it displeased him; and he grasped his father's hand to remove it from Ephraim's head to Manasseh's head. And Joseph said to his father, “Not so, my father, for this one is the first-born. Place your right hand on his head. ”
Jacob Intended This Order n Genesis 48: 19, 20 But his father refused and said, “I know, my son, I know; he also shall become a people and he also shall be great. However, his younger brother shall be greater than he, and his descendants shall become a multitude of nations. ” And he blessed them that day, saying, “By you Israel shall pronounce blessing, saying, ‘May God make you like Ephraim and Manasseh!’” Thus he put Ephraim before Manasseh.
Portion is “Shechem” n Genesis 48: 21, 22 Then Israel said to Joseph, “Behold, I am about to die, but God will be with you, and bring you back to the land of your fathers. And I give you one portion more than your brothers, which I took from the hand of the Amorite with my sword and my bow. ”
Joseph’s Bones in “Shechem” n Joshua 24: 32 Now they buried the bones of Joseph, which the sons of Israel brought up from Egypt, at Shechem, in the piece of ground which Jacob had bought from the sons of Hamor the father of Shechem for one hundred pieces of money; and they became the inheritance of Joseph's sons.
Applications n Receiving the Blessing of Abraham n Knowing God as Your Shepherd n Knowing God as Your Redeemer
The Blessing of Abraham n Genesis 12: 3 “And I will bless those who bless you, And the one who curses you I will curse. And in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed. ”
Paul’s Application of Genesis 12: 3 n Galatians 3: 8, 9 And the Scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the Gentiles by faith, preached the gospel beforehand to Abraham, saying, “All the nations shall be blessed in you. ” So then those who are of faith are blessed with Abraham, the believer.
Paul’s Application of Psalm 32: 1, 2 n Romans 4: 6, 7 just as David also speaks of the blessing upon the man to whom God reckons righteousness apart from works: “Blessed are those whose lawless deeds have been forgiven, And whose sins have been covered. ”
Paul’s Application of Psalm 32: 1, 2 n Romans 4: 8, 9 “Blessed is the man whose sin the Lord will not take into account. ” Is this blessing then upon the circumcised, or upon the uncircumcised also? For we say, “Faith was reckoned to Abraham as righteousness. ”
God As Our Shepherd n John 10: 10, 11 “The thief comes only to steal, and kill, and destroy; I came that they might have life, and might have it abundantly. I am the good shepherd; the good shepherd lays down His life for the sheep. ”
Four Promises That Become the Four Cups of Passover n Exodus 6: 6, 7 a Say, therefore, to the sons of Israel, “I am the Lord, and I will bring you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians, and I will deliver you from their bondage. I will also redeem you with an outstretched arm and with great judgments. ” Then I will take you for My people, and I will be your God; . . . ”
The Cup of Redemption, The Third Cup, Is Called “The Cup of Blessing” n 1 Corinthians 10: 16 Is not the cup of blessing which we bless a sharing in the blood of Christ? Is not the bread which we break a sharing in the body of Christ?
God is Redeemer Through the Blood Atonement n Ephesians 1: 17 In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of His grace,
