Blender Modifiers
Modifiers Non-Destructive: they do not modify the geometry of the object just the look Four types of modifiers: Modify: We won’t talk about these but they are similar to the deform group Generate The Generate group of modifiers are constructive tools that either change the general appearance of or automatically add new geometry to an object. Deform The Deform group of modifiers only change the shape of an object without adding new geometry, and are available for meshes, and often texts, curves, surfaces and/or lattices. Simulate The Simulate group of modifiers activate simulations. In most cases, these modifiers are automatically added to the modifiers stack whenever a Particle System or Physics simulation is enabled. Only apply the modifier if you want it to permanently modify the object.
Array Modifier Copies an object and offsets it from the base Fit Type: Count- specify number of copies Length-fit copies within a specified length Curve- fit copies along a curve Relative offset- offsets each new object by specified distances (X, Y, Z) Object offset- offset each new object based of position of another object (typically an empty)
Array Examples
Bevel Modifier Bevels the edges of an object. The Bevel modifier is a non-destructive alternative to the Bevel Operation in edit mode. Width: increases size of the bevel Segments: adds more edges to the bevel → increases the smoothness of the bevel Only Vertices Not Only Vertices
Boolean Modifier Modified mesh = selected object Target mesh = object chosen in the modifier window Difference The modified mesh is subtracted from the target mesh. Union The target mesh is added to the modified mesh. Intersect The target mesh is subtracted from the modified mesh.
Build Modifier Builds or deconstructs your object face by face. Reversed = deconstruct Not reversed = build Start: frame to start the animation Length: number of frames for animation
Mirror Modifier Mirrors an object along an axis Merge: merges vertices that are less distance than the merge limit Mirror object: typically an empty and uses its rotation and position
Screw Modifier Make sure the center of your object is outside of the object Axis: rotates along the axis Iterations: number of coils Screw: spacing between coils
Solidify Modifier Adds thickness to objects
Wireframe Modifier Turns object into wireframe from the object’s edges
