Session Outline • This practical workshop aims to provide an overview of the assessment and feedback tools that are available in Blackboard. • It will look at the difference between the various tools, the education benefits and workflows. • Key tools will be demonstrated, with the opportunity to try them for yourself. • A reflective activity (in your own time), to think about how you could implement A&F tools in your teaching practice.

Grade Centre Manage Assessments Each assessment set up in a course/module creates a new column in the Grade Centre (for instructor)
My Grades Student access to their grades and feedback My Grades – available from the Global Navigation or as a tools on the left menu. Each assessment set up in a course/module creates a new row in My Grades (for students) Feedback is displayed in the Comments column (this could link to any file, such as a doc or audio file).

Features Online marking and digital annotation • Using predefined comments (Quick. Mark Sets), dragging and dropping them into the student work. • Typing individual comments on student work. • Adding general comments and feedback for the entire paper. (These appear on the right of screen when the student access feedback). • Audio feedback (max. three mins) • Using a standard marking criteria (rubric) to provide general feedback on a set of pre-defined marking criteria. Turnitin Practical Tips • Difference between DUE date and POST date • If intended formative assessment rather than a final submission ensure that interim submissions are not stored in the Turnitin repository • Dealing with late submissions – additional assignment drop box • Take care if marking before DUE date, may not be final submission • Hide grades • Hide weighted and total columns in Grade Centre • Reveal Grades to students only on Post Date? Anonymous Grading • Enable anonymous grading option on Assignment set-up. • Choice of when to remove anonymity – on a specific date or when all assignments are graded (after due date). • Assignment workflow remains the same. Grade via Grade Centre > Grade Attempts (Assignment column action menu). • Provides proof that assignments were graded anonymously. Delegated Grading • Assign specific users in your course, to grade particular sets of student assignment submissions. • Users include Instructor, Teaching Assistant and Grader roles. • Assign to all, Random Set or Group. • Delegated Graders provide provisional grades and feedback. • Instructor can review grading and determine final score or reconcile it using Grade Centre, Reconcile Grades link. • Can combine with Anonymous Grading. Blackboard Assignment Tool Demo / Activity • Create an assignment - go to your Course Development and Test Area, create a Content Area and add an Assignment from the Assessment top action bar link. Also create a link to the My Grades tool. • Use Student Preview to submit an assignment • Exit Student Preview (keep user data) and mark the submission via the Grade Centre and provide feedback (annotation and comments) • Use Student Preview to view the mark and feedback via My Grades • Monitor submissions (Retention Centre, Grade Centre)
Grader App • Grader App designed for instructors. Available on i. OS. • Inline viewing of student submissions. • Enables audio and video feedback, can be direct from handheld device. • Seamless integration with Blackboard Grade Centre and My Grades. • Connects with Retention Centre risk profile (slide out on any submission listing) to view alerts or to notify student by email. Blackboard Tests • Tests and Surveys are used to measure a student’s understanding of the course content. • They are deployed to students by adding them to a content area. • 17 question types available. • Various test options such as multiple submissions, time limit, automatic feedback to self correct, etc. • Create and manage Test questions via the Control Panel > Course Tools > Tests, Surveys and Pools. • Deploy Test to a content area, properties such as availability and presentation options are managed via the content area link. • Test results, statistics and grading options are available via the action menu in the Test column in the Grade Centre.

Take a Test Demo / Activity Complete the following sample Test: > Assessment and Feedback Support course > Effective Feedback left menu > Automatic Feedback using MCQs link This tests showcases the 17 question types, unlimited attempts and how you can provide automatic feedback for a correct and incorrect answer. The incorrect feedback helps the students to self correct. Once set up this can be reused with minimal additional effort.
Managing Test Demo / Activity Grade Centre: Tests • View results, statistics and manage grades, etc. via the action menu for each Test column. • Use information to inform your future teaching, e. g. areas that students struggled to understand.

Deploy your Test. In a Content Area select Test from the Assessments action bar menu Experiment with the various options and question types that are available.

Group Assignment Tool Demo / Activity • • Join a Group Go to the Assessment and Feedback Support course, select Group Assessment link on left menu and Collaborative Group Work Assignment task. Explore the Group tool area Use tools (wiki, blog, file exchange etc. ) and view assignment. To set-up a group assignment you first create the course Groups and then an Assignment and assign group/s to it.
