Description § Their color is usually gray or black. § Their weight is 2, 090 lb to 2, 870 lb, or 3, 740 lb! § Their size is usually 4. 7 to 5. 2 ft, tail length is 27 inches, body length is 9 to 12 ft long!
Diet (food) § Their main diet in the wild is woody plants, herbs, fruits, leave alfalfa hay, grass hay, alfalfa grain pellets, and browse. § Their zoo diet is carrots, apples, bananas, and oranges. § The black rhino is a herbivore.
Young (offspring) § A black rhino gives birth to 1 calf after a gestation of about 15 months. § A rhino calf suckles for about a year. § A calf stays with its mother for 2 to 3 years then it learns how to wander around by itself in their habitat.
Predators(including humans) § They only have one predator and that is a poacher. § Poachers are people who kill rhinos and take their horn and let the body get eaten or let it decay.
Estimated population § Their estimated population is less than 2, 550 left. § They are critically endangered.
Reasons it is Endangered § The reason it is endangered is because when the poachers kill them they just take their horn.
How are we Protecting it know § We are protecting it by putting them in zoos. § We are also protecting it by raising the population in the zoos.
Other Interesting Facts § Their life span is 25 - 40 years. § A rhinos horn is not a true horn that is attached to the skull. § It grows from the skin and is made up of keratin fibers, the same material found in hair and nails. § It is often killed just for its horn. § They are at the top of their food chain.
