Black Earth Creek Meeting 060410 Water Quantity There
Black Earth Creek Meeting 06/04/10
Water Quantity • There were very few storm events so far this water year. • The largest change in stage was just over a foot and peak discharge was ~190 cfs at the site near Black Earth
Water Quantity • Upstream location had 9 discharge measurements at various stages • Rating has been developed • Peak discharge recorded and measured was ~ 50 cfs
Water Quality to Date • Submitted 74 storm samples – 35 at both the upstream and downstream gages – 2 at the middle remote gages • Submitted monthly baseflow samples • Modified constituent list to include TKN and Nitrate+Nitrite to potentially improve regressions or estimates of NH 4 in the water column
Water Quality • With the small ranges in flow, the ranges in the measured concentrations were minimal as well Storms Chloride NH 4 SS Minimum 23 0. 05 30 Maximum 50 0. 25 219 Average 34 0. 12 81 Minimum 20 0. 07 17 Maximum 79 0. 51 391 Average 33 0. 22 108 UPSTREAM DOWNSTREAM
Water Quality • The baseflow concentrations observed were similar between all sites. Average Baseflow concentrations Chloride NH 4 SS Cross Plains 27 0. 04 52 Treatment Plant 38 0. 03 31 South Valley Rd 28 0. 03 25 Black Earth 29 0. 02 19
Regressions • Ran stepwise linear regressions on the water quality data against the real-time water quality sondes outputs • Regressions looked at the both the sonde results and the log of the results (except p. H) • Did this for every parameter measured • Current regressions represent relationships determined for ranges in flows and water quality conditions measured

Black Earth Example: Ammonia
Monitoring Status • Water-quality data has been kept up to date but still have periodic problems with turbidity and fouling. • Currently repaired two of the six turbidity probes and one p. H meter
Monitoring Status
Monitoring Status • Alerts have been established and are in place. • No conditions were met to promote alert notification to group • Still finding faults in alert management
Alert Text • Each text will come with a link for those that have smart phones. • BEC Upstream - Dissolved Oxygen LOW Alarm http: //cida. usgs. gov/storms ummary/BEC/Smart. Phone. DO. jpeg • I will send the link for all parameters to the group and can be used to monitor stream conditions
Environmental Effects of Ag. Practices • Midwest Area $ • Targeting advancements in current projects to evaluate the impact of Ag. • Submitted preliminary proposal to potentially additional sondes, more constituents to sampling lists, or add edge-of-field locations • Still time to add more information • Should find out in July if the project makes the cut
