Bishop David Brown Planning Start planning what you would like to do for your placement • • • What are your interests? What do you want to do as a future career? What might impress your college, university or employer of the future? What do you hope to achieve from the placement? What activities do you hope to take part in/observe? What skills do you hope to gain/develop?
Bishop David Brown Where do I start? • Think about what it is you want to do • Research companies you could potentially work for via Google or use lists of companies in the careers library, Woking Chamber of Commerce website by selecting the industry on their website (local company names will appear) • Once you have your list, find out about the companies via their websites • Call the company reception and find out who you need to address your email / phone call to • Spend time composing your email and have a parent or teacher check it prior to sending it • Refer to your Careers Booklet for help and guidance • Speak to Mrs Eljamaly in the Study Centre office - she is more than happy to help guide you.
Bishop David Brown Company deadline examples Secure your placement early! You are competing with other schools so get in first, it may seem a long way off but the deadline will come around fast. Start now to have your placement secured by the February half-term deadline. • Mc. Laren – only open to applications for 2 weeks per year – begin checking their website for 2020 dates from early November. • Woking Council - Marketing Communications, IT & Administration – start applying NOW. Woking Council close applications around December time and it’s first come first served! • Cap Gemini – Finance, IT, Law – applications via their website during November • Banking – Barclays, HSBC, Natwest & Lloyds all have early deadlines for online applications – sign –up to the Barclays Life Skills website
Bishop David Brown Location & Punctuality Things to consider before you choose a placement. - How are you getting to the placement? Walking/Getting a lift – how long does this take? - What are the bus or train routes? - Be aware that you may have a much longer day than you are used to
Bishop David Brown What I need to find out Once you have secured a placement it is up to you to find out the placement details: • What am I expected to wear? Most workplaces have formal dress code. No revealing outfits. Some may want you in old clothes that can get dirty. • What will my working hours be? • Is there somewhere I can buy lunch or do I need a packed lunch? • What will my normal duties/tasks include? • Who do I report to on the first day?
Bishop David Brown Communication Be respectful – formal language especially with your manager and dealing with the general public
Bishop David Brown Sickness • Contact the placement in the morning, before the time you should be there. Contact details will be in your placement log book • Contact school to say you will not be attending
Bishop David Brown Health & Safety • • • Identify the person who is responsible for you: your Line Manager You will receive a health and safety talk when you first start. Listen and follow the instructions. Do not go in areas you are not allowed.
Bishop David Brown Attitude • • • Always be positive Complete all tasks cheerfully. You are there for only one week The employers do not receive anything for having you on placement. Don’t make them regret taking you on. They are offering you an opportunity – make the most of it!
Bishop David Brown Respect You will be working with all kinds of people from all backgrounds. You need to treat everyone politely and equally.
Bishop David Brown Log book/diary You will get this from Mrs Eljamaly before your placement starts. • • Fill it in everyday Ask the employer to write in it at the end of the week. This will form part of your record of achievement and your college application, so take care of it.
Bishop David Brown Problems 1) Speak to your line manager 2) Speak to school 3) You have either a visit or phone call by a member of staff. Tell them if there any problems or concerns, although this could potentially be at the end of the week.
