School Faculty and Staff are Safe and Trusted Adults who: Ø Are trained to recognize the warning signs and risk factors for suicide ideations/behaviors and emotional distress in students Ø Know how to offer words of hope and encouragement Ø Know the proper steps to help someone who may be at-risk of suicide Ø Know the steps to intervene when someone is in emotional distress that can save a life
IMPORTANT: If you have identified a student who has made a statement of harm to self or behaviors that indicate potential self-harm: NEVER leave the student alone. Escort the student to the counselor/administrator /nurse or call for security to your classroom or current location for assistance to escort the student to the proper personnel who will provide the necessary interventions for the student’s safety. Do Not allow the student to leave the area or walk to the restroom alone or to attend the next class. NEVER allow a student to escort the student to another location such as to the front office, restroom, etc. If the student refuses to stay and leaves the area, immediately call the front office, security, or administration to alert them of the situation and provide the student’s name, clothing description and the direction or location the student is headed.
Intervention Steps taken by the Campus SOS Team REMEMER: Remain with student at ALL times until the student is safely with… A member of the Student Outreach Support (SOS) Team who is a Counselor, Nurse, BISD Police Officer and campus Administrator will… Ø Contact and meet with the student’s parent/guardian Ø Inform the parent/guardian of the crisis Ø Conference with the student and the parent to complete the BISD Student Suicide Safety Plan form, the BISD Notification of Emergency Conference and provide mental health referral resources for the parent/guardian. Ø Follow up the next day with the student and parent to discuss and document the action plan taken to assist the student and provide counseling services and monitor the student.
When an Outcry happens during Non-School Hours: Contact BISD Police – on call 24/7 (956) 698 -3115 (956) 698 -3116 (956) 982 -3085 Contact your campus Administrator and after school activity Director Contact the Parent Release the student to the Parent/Guardian Follow up on the incident the following day with campus Administrator and Counselor
Report Child Abuse, It’s the Law Texas law requires that any person suspecting that a child has been abused or neglected must immediately make a report. If there is imminent danger an emergency, call 911 and then call the DFPS Texas Abuse Hotline at 1 -800 -252 -5400. You can also make an online report at www. txabusehotline. org A school counselor, school nurse or administrator will support you if you need assistance while you are calling CPS or making an online CPS report. Professionals must make a report no later than the 48 th hour after first suspecting a child has been abused or neglected or is a victim of an offense under Section 21. 11, Penal Code. A professional may not delegate to or rely on another person to make the report (Texas Family Code, Section 261. 101).
