REGISTRATION OF MARRIAGE CELEBRANTS – THE PROCESS For ministers of religion to legally perform a marriage ceremony, the organisation must: • Be listed as a recognised denomination under the Marriage Act 1961 • Nominate its ministers to be authorised celebrants • Be registered by the relevant state or territory births, deaths and marriages registry. 3
CELEBRANT REGISTRATION DETAILS • Tasmanian registered ministers of religion are issued a registration number starting with “T” • You should include your registration number: • on all marriage paperwork • when advising BDM of any change in contact details • when ordering marriage stationery • BDM use the registration number to upload & update name and address information to the Attorney-General’s Department website 4

NOTICE OF INTENDED MARRIAGE (NOIM) � When should I receive the NOIM? � At least 1 month before the ceremony. � Not more than 18 months before the ceremony. � What supporting documents do I need to see from the couple? � Evidence of date and place of birth (birth certificate or passport) AND � Evidence of identity (photo ID e. g. driver’s licence) � Evidence of change of name, if relevant � Death certificate of former spouse (if a party is widowed) � Divorce certificate (if a party is divorced) 9

CERTIFICATE OF MARRIAGE On the Certificate of Marriage to be sent to BDM check: � The date is correct � The “rites used” is completed � Witnesses names to be in block capitals � Signatures of bride, groom, witnesses and celebrant � Declaration on the reverse of the form is complete & signed 11

COMMON ISSUES The following issues often mean the registration of a marriage by BDM is delayed: • Incorrect forms used • Incomplete forms /NOIM Missing • Spelling of names • Incorrect dates of birth • Illegible handwriting (especially witnesses) 13

BDM MARRIAGE CERTIFICATES Records are only finalised when all issues have been followed up. Otherwise they remain “restricted” or “incomplete” Once the registration is finalised official certificates are generated from the BDM System 16

AMENDING A RECORD What happens when a record needs correcting? • Confirmation required from celebrant for recent weddings • Incorrect certificates need to be surrendered before replacement certificate is issued Celebrants should advise couples that they check ALL the details on marriage documents prior to signing that they are correct. If corrections need to be made it is inconvenient and costs them more money. Amendment fee is currently $50. 49. 20
