Birds of a Feather - Realism Mindi Anderson, Ph. D, RN, CPNP-PC, ANEF Assistant Professor The University of Texas at Arlington, College of Nursing
Problem/Opportunity Making simulations “real-enough” is important to consider (Anderson & Ackermann, n. d. ) Extends to students learning how to do simulation within a master’s level course, Simulation Application in Nursing (Anderson, 2010)
Solution Added lecture on realism Students have an opportunity to take the Simulation Innovation Resource Center (SIRC) on-line course on Maximizing Realism (Anderson & Ackermann, n. d. ).
Solution Use moulage (makeup) (Anderson & Ackermann, n. d. ). Students have a day where they make “vomit” Different supplies/recipe cards Students vote = best recipe
Making Moulage “Emesis”
Solution Practice making bruises Various paints Vote on best Watch staining!!! Might use spare parts (Anderson & Ackermann, n. d. )
Making Moulage “Bruises”
Other Ways- Increase Realism Consider: Participant senses Standardized patients Instructor attitude/behavioral guidelines Hybrids Appropriate roles within simulation (Anderson & Ackermann, n. d. ).
Outcome Realistic simulation scenarios Students have “fun” while learning
