Biotic and Abiotic factors 1 All Ecosystems Have

Biotic and Abiotic factors 1

All Ecosystems Have… • Example: Think about a pond…

A Pond Ecosystem • What are some things found in ponds?

A Pond Ecosystem • What are some things found in ponds? • Water, fish, plants, birds, bugs, soil sunlight, air, bacteria, animals

A Pond Ecosystem Are all of these things living? • Water, fish, plants, birds, bugs, soil sunlight, air, bacteria, animals

A Pond Ecosystem Are all of these things living?

A Pond Ecosystem Are all of these things living? NO!! An ecosystem has many important parts that are living and non-living.

A Pond Ecosystem Are all of these things living? Living Non-Living Fish Water Plants Soil Birds Sunlight Air Bugs Bacteria

The Nonliving Environment • Abiotic factors- the nonliving parts of an organism’s environment. • Examples include air, water, temperature, rocks and minerals, light, and soil. • Abiotic factors affect an organism’s life.

The Living Environment • Biotic factors- all the living (or once-living) organisms that inhabit an environment. • All organisms depend on others directly or indirectly for food, shelter, reproduction, or protection.

Biotic Factors The living parts of an ecosystem. They include animals, plants, fungi, protists, and bacteria.

What are the LIVING parts of an ecosystem called?

What are the LIVING parts of an ecosystem called? Biotic Factors

What are the NON-LIVING parts of an ecosystem called?

What are the NON-LIVING parts of an ecosystem called? Abiotic Factors

Objective: Importance of Abiotic Factors • Essential Question: What role do abiotic factors play in ecosystems? 36

What role do abiotic factors play in an ecosystem?

What role do abiotic factors play in an ecosystem? Sun *Provides Light, Heat, and Energy *Without the sun: All biotic factors (all living things) would die

What role do abiotic factors play in an ecosystem? Water *Provides a place to live for many creatures, hydrates all biotic factors *Without water: All biotic factors (all living things) would die 39

What role do abiotic factors play in an ecosystem? Air *Helps many biotic factors breathe *Without air: Most biotic factors (most living things) would die 40

What role do abiotic factors play in an ecosystem? Temperature *Many creatures can only survive in certain temperatures *Extreme temperature changes: Could kill many of the biotic factors 41

What role do abiotic factors play in an ecosystem? Soil *Provides a home, nutrients, support *Without the soil: Plants would die and many biotic factors would be 42 affected

What would happen to all the biotic factors if there were no abiotic factors?

What would happen to all the biotic factors if there were no abiotic factors? All biotic factors would DIE without abiotic factors!!!!!!

What would happen to the biotic factors in this ecosystem if… There was no sun There was no water There was no soil There were no minerals
