Biomes Terrestrial Only Tropical Rainforest Desert Grassland Deciduous Forest Taiga Tundra
Biomes These are the four areas we will look at. Location n Climate n Flora (plants) n Fauna (animals) n
Tropical Rainforest n n Location: Near equator in Africa, South America, Philippines & Malaysia Climate: Hot (68 F – 93 F) Rainy (400 cm +) Vegetation: Abundant plants, trees form a canopy Animals: Many insects, huge variety of animals
Tropical Rainforest n Contains more species of plants and animals of other Biomes combined.
Grasslands/Savanna Location: Africa & South America (near the equator) Asia & United States n Climate: Moderate rain (30 cm to 130 cm), not enough to support trees Cold but not harsh winters, semi-hot summers (36 F to 86 F) n Vegetation: Grass limited trees n Animals: Home to largest land animals: elephants, rhino, buffalos, and hippos n
Grasslands n The animals
Desert n n Location: Found on every continent. Climate: Hot, dry, cool to cold nights (45 F to 100 F) Little rain (less than 25 cm) Vegetation: Very little Animals: Little variety, many small, adapted to extreme heat or cold, and very dry conditions
Desert n Plants and animals must survive with little water
Deciduous Forest n n Location : Eastern US (Kennesaw, GA) Europe, East China Climate: Above average rainfall (75 to 125 cm), Moderate Temp. (43 F to 82 F) Vegetation: Trees drop leaves in fall, grow in spring Animals: Medium variety, average number of insects
Deciduous Forest The animals
Taiga/ Coniferous Forest n n Location: Northern Europe, Russia, Canada Northern North America Climate: Cold (35 14 F – 57 F) Snowfall (35 to 75 cm) Vegetation: Coniferous Trees, limited variety because of harsh climate Animal: limited variety, moose, deer, beavers, insects
Taiga n Animals and Plants
Tundra Location: Extreme north, Arctic n Climate: Very cold, dry (-15 F to 54 F) Little rain (25 cm – 50 cm) n Vegetation: Few trees, limited plants, moss, lichen (permafrost) n Animals: Caribou, insects in summer, wolves, birds that fly south, polar bear n
