BIOMECHANICS Sport science field that applies the laws
BIOMECHANICS Sport science field that applies the laws of mechanics and physics to human performance.
BIOMECHANICS • Helps to describe, explain, and predict the mechanical aspects of human exercise, sport and play. • Helps to improve performance. • The combination of physics and human movement. • http: //www. youtube. com/watch? v=x 6 y 70_Hn 9 SY
KINETIC CHAIN • POTENTIAL VS. KINETIC ENERGY • Pertains to movement energy. • Examines the relationship between all the movements involved in a given activity. • What does a golf swing, pitching a baseball, jumping, and running look like anatomically?
SCENARIO… • You are a PE teacher at an Elementary school. You need to teach a class of First Graders how to 1)run properly and 2)throw a ball properly. • Provide specific steps for each instruction/direction. • Break down these actions into specific parts.

Kinetic Chain – Gait Cycle (528) • • Initial Contact Loading Response Mid Stance Terminal Stance Pre Swing (toe off) Initial Swing Mid Swing Terminal Swing
Kinetic Chain - Throwing
• Windup Phase ▫ First movement until ball leaves gloved hand ▫ Lead leg strides forward while both shoulders abduct, externally rotate and horizontally abduct • Cocking Phase ▫ Hands separate (achieve max. external rotation) while lead foot comes in contact w/ ground • Acceleration ▫ Max external rotation until ball release (humerus adducts, horizontally adducts and internally rotates) ▫ Scapula elevates, abducts and rotates upward
• Deceleration Phase ▫ Point from ball release until max shoulder internal rotation ▫ Eccentric contraction of ext. rotators to decelerate humerus while rhomboids decelerate scapula • Follow-Through Phase ▫ End of motion when athlete is in a balanced position
CLOSED VS. OPEN CHAIN EXERCISES • CLOSED CHAIN -are exercises performed where the hand (for arm movement) or foot (for leg movement) is fixed and cannot move. • Weight Bearing exercises. • GRAVITY • Squat, Deadlift, Power Clean, Push-ups
CLOSED VS. OPEN CHAIN EXERCISES • OPEN CHAIN - These exercises are performed typically where the hand or foot is free to move. Non Weight Bearing. • Movement is typically at the knee/elbow joint and force is applied at the distal end. • Bicep curl, hamstring curl, quad extension
