MID-LATITUDE FORESTS What are the middle latitudes? 23 ½ °- 66 ½ ° north or south of the Equator
Deciduous-. – The leaves “decide” to fall (in the fall) – Oaks, birches, and maples (broadleaf) Coniferous– Named after the cones that protect their seeds – Exist in the colder parts of the mid-latitudes. • Location? – Trees that can survive long, cold winters. – Pines, spruces, and firs
Deciduous Trees “decide” to drop leaves. Deciduous trees include oak, maple, birch, aspen, hickory (and fruit trees like apple, pear, peach and cherry. )
Coniferous trees are “cone” bearing with needles Coniferous trees include pine, cedar, spruce, juniper, and redwood

Savanna A Savanna is a tropical grassland with scattered trees (like baobab), and a wet/dry climate.

A temperate grassland with tall grass and scattered wildflowers. Trees may grow along river banks. Prairie
Steppe • is the Russian word for “treeless plain. ” It is a cool, dry, temperate grassland also known as a plain. (Grass is shorter than prairie)

Desert • Receives less than 10 inches of water per year Plants include varieties of cactus and shrubs with small or leathery leaves
