Biomass Facts Biomass is one of the oldest forms of energy. Biomass is a renewable form of energy. It is the ultimate recycling machine Biomass can be transported many different ways but it will usually depend on the biomass type/form, quantity, amount, and who it’s going to. Biomass is anything that is/once was alive. (it obtains its energy from the sun) It is a waste eliminator. We can take waste and burn it for electricity, to create energy, and other forms of fuel. Biomass can be harvested and grown again unlike coal, oil, and gas
Categories of Biomass Materials According to http: //www. biomassenergycentre. org. uk/portal/page? _pageid=75, 17304&_dad=portal&_schema=PORTA L Virgin wood, from forestry, arboricultural activities or from wood processing Energy crops: high yield crops grown specifically for energy applications Agricultural residues are of a wide variety of types, and the most appropriate energy conversion technologies and handling protocols vary from type to type Food waste, from food and drink manufacture, preparation and processing, and post-consumer waste Energy crops are grown specifically for use as fuel and offer high output per hectare with low inputs Agricultural residues: residues from agriculture harvesting or processing Virgin wood consists of wood and other products such as bark and sawdust which have had no chemical treatments or finishes applied There are residues and waste at all points in the food supply chain from initial production, through processing, handling and distributions to post-consumer waste from hotels, restaurants and individual houses Industrial waste and co-products from manufacturing and industrial processes. Many industrial processes and manufacturing operations produce residues, waste or coproducts that can potentially be used or converted to biomass fuel
Risks and Benefits Risks Sustainability, the amount of biomass being used has to be able to not deplete the current supply of crops being used so it does not require even more in the future. While Biomass doesn’t emit CO 2 it does emit methane gas which is very harmful to the earths ozone layer. Biomass is very expensive and requires more of it to do the same amount of some fossil fuels. Benefits Biomass generally does not emit any carbon dioxide so it provides clean energy. Those who use Biomass get tax credit from the government. Biomass is plentiful and renewable meaning as long as we can make it we have a source of energy in the future.
Emerging Technology Envergent Gasification According to https: //www. envergenttech. com/, “Envergent Technologies, a UOP joint venture with Ensyn, offers a practical and commercially proven path to green energy. RTP™, or rapid thermal processing technology, is a fast thermal conversion process used to convert cellulosic biomass feedstock, usually forestry or agricultural residuals, into RTP green fuel—a light, pourable, clean-burning liquid biofuel. ” Use of high temperature and controlled environment that converts biomass into gas Thermochemical Conversion Used for converting biomass into fuel gases and chemicals
