Biology Unit 3: Interdependence of Living Things Chapter 1: Ecosystem and Natural Equilibrium Activity 1: Distribution of Living Things in an Ecosystem (page 122)
What is an Ecosystem? • In simple terms, an ecosystem is all the living and non-living things that are found together in an environment • An ecosystem is made up of the habitat and non-living things (biotope) and different living species (biocenosis)
Scientific Terms • Population: a group of living things of the same species that live together and interbreed • Community involves the living things of different species that live together and interact • Flora: plants or plant life • Fauna: animals or animal life
Classification of Fauna • Fauna are classified into 3 groups according to their diet: – Herbivores: are animals that only consume plants – Carnivores: are animals that only consume other animals – Omnivores: are animals that consume both animals and plants
Decomposers • Decomposers are organisms that live in or on the soil • Decomposers break down dead living things and convert them to nutrients or mineral salts • Mineral salts is then used by living plants to grow and do photosynthesis
Interactions in an Ecosystem • In an ecosystem, living things depend on other living-things and non-living things to survive • Flora and fauna depend on each other in order to survive: – Animals depend on other animals or on plants in order to eat and survive – Plants depend on the mineral salts that result from dead animals and other dead plants when they get decomposed
